______________
ENGLISH
A key feature of Frank Zappa’s music is its
extreme topicality.
In fact it still conveys an innovative and exhilarating musical message
that made a profound impression on the development of music in the
twentieth century. Today, in 2017, it is very clear that Frank Zappa’s
open and unbounded vision, and his exploration of many different
areas, ranging from rock to experimental music, jazz and theater, are
shared by many people, and they are now a part of our contemporary
sensibilities. Zappa’s beautiful themes, his innovative solutions, the
irony of his lyrics that address the clichés of society, and his rebellious
but at the same time constructive approach, have contributed towards
making him a unique and unrepeatable figure who has inspired several
generations of musicians as well as his fans. It is therefore absolutely
necessary for us to keep on playing Zappa’s music, experiencing it and
living inside it, each in our own way, so as to be able to gain access
to the continuous inspiration that it provides. Frank has left us a lot
of tracks that can be developed further, and arranging his music for
an orchestra is like digging into it and looking for ever-new ideas, in
an on-going process that seems to be endless. His is a vast body of
works, which lead off in many different directions and are therefore very
complex to tackle. This new phase of our project includes a number of
compositions that cover a period from the early ‘70s to the ‘90s. Some
of these pieces feature the legendary Napoleon Murphy Brock, who
collaborated with Frank Zappa for over 12 years and is thus the living
continuation of his memory. Working alongside him was a great honor
and a great pleasure for me, both from a musical and a human point of
view, and his contribution to this record has been absolutely unique and
remarkable. Brock’s suggestions on how to interpret Zappa’s creations
and his explanations of the way Zappa performed certain pieces were
extremely illuminating. This new phase of exploration of Frank Zappa is
a further step towards establishing an ever-deeper symbiosis between
the Tankio Band and the music of this great source of inspiration.
Over the years, thanks to the on-going dedication of the group to this
journey of discovery, as well as our constant urge to create our own
innovative materials, all of which are previously unreleased, we have
been able to express some profound new forms of originality in a very
powerful and clear way! The guests on this record with whom I’ve had
the pleasure of collaborating over the years and who I managed to get
involved in the project are Alex Sipiagin, Gabriele Mirabassi, Antonello
Salis, Ruben Chaviano and Mario Corvini. All of them have made
a fantastic contribution. I’d also like to thank all the musicians of the
Tankio Band for their great contributions! Additional thanks go to Michel
Audisso for the transcription of Florentine Pogen and Sofa.
Many thanks to Fabrizio Salvatore, Alessandro Guardia, all the
team of AlfaMusic and the sound engineers of Forward Studios &
the AlfaMusic Studio for their excellent work!
