Gleam Records è orgogliosa di annunciare l'uscita di A Congregation of Folks, il sorprendente debutto del promettente esordiente Daniele Germani.  Congregation of Folks introduce una voce avvincente e vivace al sassofono contralto e un compositore unico e intrigante.  Dieci composizioni jazz moderne, tutte scritte da Germani, prendono vita magnificamente con l'aiuto del suo affiatato quartetto composto dal pianista Justin Salisbury, dal bassista Giuseppe Cucchiarae dal batterista Jongkuk Kim.  A Congregation of Folks sarà disponibile su CD e download / streaming digitale il 26 marzo 2021.

 Originario della regione italiana di Frosinone ma con sede a Brooklyn, NY, Daniele Germani è una stella in rapida ascesa sulla scena jazz contemporanea di New York. Diplomato al Conservatorio di Frosinone, Germani si è trasferito a Boston nel 2013 quando gli è stata offerta una borsa di studio per frequentare il Berklee College of Music.  Mentre era lì, è stato ammesso al prestigioso Berklee Global Jazz Institute di Danilo Perez, dove ha studiato sotto la guida di Terri Lyne Carrington, Joe Lovanoe del suo mentore, George Garzone.

 Le sue esperienze rivelatrici in classe furono eguagliate solo da quelle sul palco dell'orchestra, il più delle volte quella del Wally's Jazz Cafe, il leggendario jazz club dove Germani si è fatto le ossa.  Conosciuta come la "palestra" per musicisti locali ed emergenti, esibirsi al Wally's divenne un evento normale per Germani; alla fine si è esibito lì 2-3 volte alla settimana come sideman e con i suoi gruppi.  Una mutevole "congregazione di gente" da tutte le parti del mondo si sarebbe unita a Germani notte dopo notte nel luogo leggendario.  Wally ha svolto un ruolo fondamentale nello sviluppo musicale e personale di Germani e gran parte dello spirito vibrante e stimolante del club è catturato in questo debutto registrato.  "Wally’s era il luogo in cui sognavamo ad occhi aperti", descrive Germani.

 All'inizio della sua permanenza a Boston, Germani si unì al suo collega bassista italiano Giuseppe Cucchiara, al batterista sudcoreano Jongkuk Kime al pianista originario dell'Oregon Justin Salisbury.  Hanno immediatamente cliccato e hanno formato un gruppo affiatato che si è sviluppato in un'amicizia significativa e in una partnership musicale.  Si sono esibiti frequentemente a Boston - da Wally's e in ensemble assortiti al Berklee - e sono rimasti un'unità durante la loro laurea e il successivo trasferimento a New York City nel 2017. Da allora, hanno continuato a esibirsi insieme, oltre a costruire carriere indipendenti di successo per conto proprio, ciascuno che sale allo stato di "prima chiamata" tra i suoi pari di talento.

 Germani ha intrapreso una sfida personale nel 2019 per volere del suo buon amico e assiduo collaboratore Leo Genovese.  "Leo è un compositore brillante e ciascuna delle sue canzoni è più bella dell'ultima", dice Germani. Ispirato dal tesoro di composizioni sbalorditive di Genovese, Germani si è sfidato a scrivere una canzone al giorno. “Il mio obiettivo era essere presente nel momento in cui scrivevo le canzoni… Ho seguito il flusso del momento e il mio approccio alla scrittura è cambiato a seconda di quello che è successo quel giorno.  Volevo essere sorpreso dalle mie creazioni. "  Ad oggi, Germani ha scritto oltre 450 canzoni.  Due di loro appaiono in Leave It Blank For Now;  L'uscita di Germani nel 2020 Chant Records con Genovese, il suo compagno di band di Wally Boni, il fedele bassista Francesco Marcocci e ancora una volta, Kim - altri dieci sono presenti in questo straordinario debutto.

 In A Congregation of Folks, Germani accompagna gli ascoltatori in un vasto viaggio emotivo che spazia dal gioioso e rauco al pensieroso e indagatore.  I momenti salienti includono l'apertura ad alta energia "They Move In On The Action" che lascia il posto al lirico "One Moment to Moment", una bella vetrina per Salisbury.  Un altro pezzo forte è la meditativa title track che si apre con una splendida intro di assolo di sassofono "pensata per chiamare insieme gente amata".  Questa traccia è stata ispirata dalla copertina dell'album: la foto del matrimonio dei suoi genitori con Germani e la sua band è stata sovrapposta digitalmente nello scatto, riunendo tutti.  “No Clouds in the Air” è un'esplorazione contemplativa che prende il via con un pesante drone, infestato e presciente, mentre Germani e la sua band duellano sui toni, creando un ricco arazzo di suoni.  "You Won't Find A Better Listener" è una conversazione gioiosa e musicale tra Germani e Salisbury, paragonata alla "migliore conversazione a tarda notte, piena effervescenza e profondità".

Originally from the Frosinone region of Italy but based in Brooklyn, NY, Daniele Germani is a fast-rising star on the contemporary New York jazz scene. A graduate of the Conservatory of Frosinone, Germani moved to Boston in 2013 when he was offered a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music. While there, he was admitted to Danilo Perez’s prestigious Berklee Global Jazz Institute, where he studied under the tutelage of Terri Lyne Carrington, Joe Lovano, and his mentor, George Garzone.

His revelatory experiences in the classroom were rivaled only by those on the bandstand, most frequently that of Wally’s Jazz Cafe, the legendary jazz club where Germani cut his teeth. Known as the “training ground” for local and rising musicians, performing at Wally’s became a regular occurrence for Germani; eventually he was performing there 2-3 times weekly as a sideman and with his own groups. A shifting “congregation of folks” from all parts of the world would join Germani night after night at the storied venue. Wally’s played a vital role in Germani’s musical and personal development, and much of the club’s vibrant and inspiring spirit is captured on this recorded debut. “Wally’s was the place where we dreamt with our eyes open,” Germani describes. 

Early on during his time in Boston, Germani linked up with fellow Italian bassist Giuseppe Cucchiara, South Korean drummer Jongkuk Kimand Oregon-born pianist Justin Salisbury. They immediately clicked, and went on to form a tight knit group that developed into a meaningful friendship and musical partnership. They performed frequently in Boston - at Wally’s and in assorted ensembles at Berklee - and they remained a unit through their graduation and subsequent move to New York City in 2017. Since then, they have continued to perform together, as well as build successful independent careers on their own, each ascending to “first call” status among their talented peers. 

Germani took on a personal challenge in 2019 at the behest of his good friend and frequent collaborator Leo Genovese. “Leo is a brilliant composer and each of his songs are more beautiful than the last,” says Germani. Inspired by Genovese’s trove of jaw-dropping compositions, Germani challenged himself to write one song a day. “My goal was to bepresent in the moment when writing songs… I followed the flow of the moment, and my approach to writing changed depending on what happened that day. I wanted to be surprised by my own creations.” To date, Germani has written over 450 songs. Two of them appear on Leave It Blank For Now; Germani’s 2020 Chant Records release with Genovese, his Wally’s bandmate Boni, stalwart bassist Francesco Marcocci and once again, Kim - ten others are featured on this stunning debut. 

On A Congregation of Folks, Germani takes listeners on an expansive emotional journey that ranges from joyous and raucous to pensive and inquiring. Highlights include the high energy opener “They Move In On The Action'' which gives way to the lyrical “One Moment to Moment”, a lovely showcase for Salisbury. Another standout is the meditative title track which opens with a gorgeous saxophone solo intro “meant to call beloved folks together”. This track was inspired by the album’s front cover: his parents’ wedding picture with Germani and his band digitally superimposed in the shot, bringing everyone together. “No Clouds in the Air” is a contemplative exploration that kicks off with a heavy drone, haunted and prescient, while Germani and his band duel in tones, creating a rich tapestry of sound. “You Won’t Find A Better Listener” is joyous and musical conversation between Germani and Salisbury, likened to “the best late- night conversation, full effervescence and depth.”
