Abertura das Águas è il mare che si apre all'incontro. È la nostra Lemanjá (Yemaja), la regina dei mari, che saluta e “culla tra le braccia i suoi figli con sguardo amorevole” nelle parole di Mestre Sapopemba₁. Ed è in questo abbraccio universale, nello stile Ya madekó, Ya Kekerê (etnia yorubá https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoruba_(popolo) cantato da Andrea Marquee, brasiliana in tutto e per tutto, che si apre questo album nato per accogliere la musica ed i grandi i musicisti che vi hanno partecipato dal Brasile e dall'Italia. Abertura das Águas apre quindi l'album con un'improvvisazione spontanea nata dal berimbau e dalla magica batteria di Ari Colares e dal mio pianoforte; un brano inciso al momento, improvvisato e ispirato dall'adattamento di Sapopemba, melodia tradizionale cantata a Lemanjá…una musica suonata con il cuore che batteva forte.

Ed eccoVi subito dopo, Stefano Rossini musicista italiano dall'anima brasiliana: la sua batteria è presente fin dall'introduzione del mio Samba in Bari, un samba in 7, che svela subito lo spirito dell'album: un jazz brasiliano di gande originalità, colorato di diversità ritmiche che mirano a ritrarre un Brasile profondo, contemporaneo.

Ed ora si unisce a noi un caro amico brasiliano Mario Caribé, uno dei più grandi bassisti del mondo arrivato a Roma via mare e cielo nel cammino tra la Scozia e l'Italia offrendoci un suono di grande impatto.

Il sodalizio con AlfaMusic, sopitosi durante la pandemia, rinasce nel 2023, riaffermando quelle che in un incontro tra me e Fabrizio Salvatore al Jazzit Pompei 2019 erano state le premesse e le promesse scambiateci: il nostro album italo-brasiliano!

Abertura das Águas ha portato anche ricordi e benedizioni, come fosse un battesimo, nel tango Jose dedicato a mio padre (in memoriam) e interpretato da Natalino Marchetti. Tasti ed ance dorate, note di una fisarmonica perpetuate eternamente nella sua squisita ed emozionante interpretazione di “Jose”.

Poi arriva Carinhoso, un classico dei grandi autori brasiliani Pixinguinha e João de Barro. Un arrangiamento per pianoforte che utilizza delicati registri acuti, con la melodia pronunciata dalla mano sinistra. Un regalo alla mia cara madre, Suzi. Dal cuore, con “carinho” (gentilezza).

Segue il mio Beijo no Asfalto, un brano molto speciale per me, di matrice jazzistica, inciso in trio con Stefano Rossini e Mario Caribé. Tempi nuovi, nuove divisioni delle acque! E’ il momento di Ave rara (di Edu Lobo e Aldir Blanc): la grande sorpresa di questo album! È stata una gioia immensa registrare con il leggendario Edu Lobo al piano e alla voce. Lui, parte della mia educazione musicale fin dai tempi delle collaborazioni di Upa Neguinho, Ponteio, Arrastão e Tom Jobim, è venuto generosamente e per amore della Musica a registrare con me per far parte di questo album, il mio “mare musicale”. Una collaborazione speciale ed eterna!

Prosuguiamo con il classico As Pastorinhas dei grandi autori Noel Rosa e João de Barro (Braguinha), tra i maggiori rappresentanti del canzoniere brasiliano. Ed ecco quindi la pluripremiata batteria di Edu Ribeiro (Trio Corrente) e l'impeccabile basso di Bruno Migotto, che si uniscono ancora una volta alla mia formazione in trio. Una reliquia del canzoniere brasiliano, cantata nelle notti di carnevale dove “il cielo splendeva dell'estrela dalva (stella del mattino) e la luna era vertiginosa di tanto splendore”.

Andrea Marquee porta ancora una volta il passato in dono nella sua indescrivibile voce presente Oju mamã, portando con sé il nostro Brasile.

Sem ensaio ① ② ③. Brasile e Italia sulle chiavi di Stefania Tallini e Christianne Neves. Ce lo eravamo promesso…un giorno suoneremo insieme con due pianoforti, “senza provare nulla” … e così è stato: tre brani inediti che sono emersi nel modo più naturale possibile. Grande Stefania, grande amica, grande musicalità! E’ il momento di Lorenzo Corsi, che ha suonato dolcemente il mio Samba em Triângulo esprimendo la sua leggerezza e sensibilità tramite le note incise con l'ottavino e con il flauto in Do. Guardavo Lorenzo mentre suonava con il suo bellissimo sorriso… un’immagine che arriverà a chiunque ascolterà questo brano. Ecco quindi Franco Piana (zio di Lorenzo Corsi), grande Musicista che, con il suo flicorno, ha onorato l’omaggio a Dave Grusin, il musicista americano celebrato nel brano Mr. Grusin.

E infine, ancora una volta, l'acqua: questa volta è la pioggia, rappresentata in ÒYÒ Jungle, una celebrazione ritmata che evoca l'Africa e i suoi rituali con Stefano Rossini alle percussioni e super Mario Caribé al basso.

Abertura das Águas è un album solare, post-pandemia, pieno di speranza e di nuovi percorsi e propone un Brasile jazzistico, originale, creativo, modellato con cura dai produttori Alessandro Guardia e Fabrizio Salvatore.

Possano le acque aprirsi a tutti coloro che ascoltano questo album realizzato con così tanto “carinho” (gentilezza). Buone maree!

Abertura das Águas is the sea that parts for the encounter. It is our Iemanjá, the queen of the seas, who greets and “cradles her children in her arms with a loving gaze” in the words of Mestre Sapopemba₁. And it is in this universal embrace, in the Ya madekó, Ya Kekerê (yorubá) sung by Andrea Marquee, Brazilian through and through, that this album parts open. It sets the stage to welcome the music and musicians who participated, both from Brazil and Italy.
Abertura das Águas opens the album with a spontaneous improvisation born from the berimbau and magical drums of Ari Colares and from my random piano. Everything created in the moment, inspired by Sapopemba's adaptation of a traditional melody for Iemanjá. All improvised. All played as the heart was touched.
Next, the Italian man with the most Brazilian soul emerges: Stefano Rossini. His drums are present from the introduction of my Samba in Bari, a samba in 7,revealing the spirit of the album: original Brazilian jazz with rhythmic diversities aiming to portray a profound Brazil. And joining us, here comes the authentically Brazilian friend and one of the greatest bassists in the world, Mario Caribé, who arrived by water and air on the path between Scotland and Italy, leaving his
impactful mark. What a presence!
The partnership with AlfaMusic, dormant during the pandemic, resurrects in 2023, reaffirming what a 5-minute meeting between me and Fabrizio Salvatore at Jazz it Pompei 2019 would result in: our Italo-Brazilian album!
Abertura das Águas also brought memories and blessings, like a baptism, in the tango Jose dedicated to my father (in memoriam) and interpreted by Natalino Marchetti. Hands of gold, notes of an accordion perpetuated eternally in his exquisite and emotional interpretation of “Jose”.
Then comes Carinhoso, a classic by Pixinguinha and João de Barro. A piano arrangement using delicate high registers, with the melody quoted by the left hand. A gift to my equally delicate mother, Suzi. From the heart, with “carinho”.
Next is my jazzy Beijo no Asfalto, a very special track to me, with the Stefano/Caribé trio. New times, new partings of waters!
Ave rara (by Edu Lobo and Aldir Blanc): the great surprise of this album! It was an immense joy to record with the legendary Edu Lobo on piano and vocals. He, a part of my musical education since the times of Upa Neguinho, Ponteio, Arrastão, and Tom Jobim’s collaborations, generously came to record with me to be part of this musical sea. For the love of music. What an “ave rara” (rare bird) Edu is! A special and eternal collaboration!
There's also the classic As Pastorinhas by the great Noel Rosa and João de Barro (Braguinha), major representatives of the Brazilian songbook. Here, the award-winning drums of Edu Ribeiro (Trio Corrente) and the impeccable bass of Bruno Migotto, joining our trio once again. A relic of the Brazilian songbook, sung in the carnival nights where “the sky shone with the estrela dalva (morning star) and the moon was dizzy with such sheer splendor”. Andrea Marquee once again brings the past as a gift in her indescribable present Oju mamã voice, carrying our Brazil.
Sem ensaio ① ② ③. Brazil and Italy on the keys of Stefania Tallini and Christianne Neves. We had promised each other. One day we would play two pianos, without rehearsal, “senza provare nulla”, and that's what happened: three unrehearsed tracks that emerged in the most natural way possible. Great Stefania, great friend, great musicality!
Lorenzo Corsi arrived flying! He softly blew my Samba em Triângulo, de triangulating everything! His lightness and sensitivity are recorded in piccolo and in the flute in C. He played with a smile and will make anyone who listens to this track smile. And then came his uncle, Franco Piana, a great musician who, with his flugelhorn, honored the presence of Dave Grusin, the American musician celebrated in the track Mr. Grusin.
And finally, once again, the water. This time the rain, portrayed in ÒYÒ Jungle, a rhythmic celebration evoking Africa and its rituals with Stefano on percussion and super Mario Caribè on bass.

It's a solar album. Post-pandemic. Full of hope and new paths.
It brings a jazzy, original, inventive Brazil, carefully shaped by the producers Alessandro Guardia and Fabrizio Salvatore.
May the waters part to all who listen to this album made with so much “carinho”.
