Sandro Savino Quintet è un progetto che nasce dall’idea del pianista materano Sandro Savino di raccontare, a suo modo, la melodia della canzone italiana. La band, diretta dal pianista, è composta da Fabrizio Gaudino alla tromba e flicorno, Gianfranco Menzella al sax tenore, Giampaolo Laurentaci al contrabbasso e Fabio Accardi alla batteria.

Il titolo dell’album, “Italians do it better”, è proposto come una divertente e ironica provocazione.

Sette i brani: cinque sono celebri canzoni italiane reinterpretate in forma di suite, in cui i temi originali si intrecciano con nuove sezioni appositamente composte da Savino; due sono brani inediti a firma del pianista materano.

Il Sandro Savino Quintet regala un ascolto divertente e profondo, delicato e potente, sublimato dalla complicità dei musicisti e dalla loro interazione. Le strutture degli arrangiamenti esaltano in maniera equilibrata le caratteristiche strumentali di tutti i componenti della band. Il tutto è concepito e arrangiato per poter essere apprezzato da un pubblico vasto ed eterogeneo.

“Italians do it better” è il primo di una serie di album che Savino ha intenzione di registrare, tutti dedicati alla melodia italiana e alle sue molteplici sfumature. In questo primo lavoro discografico è possibile cogliere diversi aspetti della musicalità del leader: da un lato le capacità non scontate di raffinato arrangiatore, sempre alla ricerca di soluzioni strutturali e timbriche accattivanti che lascino l’ascoltatore stupito ed appagato; dall'altro, l’eleganza del suo pianismo al servizio della band. I sette brani risultano piacevoli ed interessanti sia se ascoltati singolarmente, sia nella narrazione completa del disco.

Sandro Savino Quintet is a project born from the vision of Matera-based pianist Sandro Savino to retell the melody of Italian song in his own unique way. Led by the pianist, the band features Fabrizio Gaudino on trumpet and flugelhorn, Gianfranco Menzella on tenor sax, Giampaolo Laurentaci on double bass, and Fabio Accardi on drums.

The album title, “Italians do it better”, is intended as a playful and ironic provocation.

Comprising seven tracks: five are famous Italian songs reinterpreted as suites, where original themes intertwine with new sections composed specifically by Savino; the remaining two are original compositions by the Italian pianist.

The Sandro Savino Quintet offers a listening experience that is enjoyable yet profound, delicate yet powerful, sublimated by the musicians' complicity and interaction. The arrangements are structured to highlight the instrumental characteristics of all band members in a balanced way. The entire work is conceived and arranged to be appreciated by a vast and heterogeneous audience.

“Italians do it better” is the first in a series of albums Savino intends to record, all dedicated to Italian melody and its many nuances. In this first release, several aspects of the leader's musicality shine through: on one hand, his sophisticated arranging skills, always in search of captivating structural and timbral solutions that leave the listener both surprised and satisfied; on the other, the elegance of his piano playing at the service of the band. The seven tracks are engaging both as individual pieces and as part of the album’s complete narrative.
