If we consider both physical and digital releases, «Zec» is the twentieth album Claudio Cojaniz has recorded for Caligola. Our collaboration began in 2004 and is still active, marked by a shared sense of direction and continuity. “Zec” is an Uzbek word that refers to a prisoner who tries, with great effort, to free himself… Over the past forty years, the Friulian pianist has established himself as a distinctive voice in Italian jazz. The duo is a form Cojaniz particularly loves. This is the sixth recording in which he engages in a direct, balanced exchange with another musician. Previous encounters include the trombone of Giancarlo Schiaffini, the reeds of Francesco Bearzatti, and the double basses of Franco Feruglio and Alessandro Turchet. Here, Antonino Puliafito’s cello introduces a new element and brings Claudio Cojaniz full circle back to his early classical training. All the tunes performed are unreleased with the exception of L'elegia Malibran, which Cojaniz had performed on piano solo on the album «Balkan Blues Piano», released by Caligola only in digital format in 2020. The composition (here in its instrumental version, track n. 1 of the album) is dedicated to Milena Ermacora and Gabriella Pellos, singers in the choir of the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. The title, L’elegia Malibran, is in fact an anagram of their names, Milena and Gabriella.
