Press Release
First introduced by Art Tatum and popularized by Nat King Cole, the piano–guitar–bass trio reached its zenith in the mid-1950s with pianist Oscar Peterson. This combo, although little used in modern bop and avant–garde jazz, has stood the test of time and is back in vogue with a trio composed of Ron Carter, Mulgrew Miller and Russell Malone. Russian double bass player Yuri Goloubev appears very fond of this particular line up, since ten years after releasing «Standpoint» (Caligola, 2012), which sees him with Roberto Olzer on piano and Fabrizio Spadea on guitar, he is back at it with «Trionomics». In this new and inspired session, recorded in the wonderful Sala dell’Ermellino in Milan, Goloubev is joined by pianist Michele Di Toro – with whom he shares a long experience both in duo and in trio (with Marco Zanoli on drums) – and guitarist Hans Mathisen from Norway. However, if from the repertoire of a drumless trio you would perhaps rather expect a sequel of standards, these three artists will surprise you with ten original compositions, as if to emphasise that this line–up is not at all outdated and tied to the past. In their music, which is far from conventional mainstream, there are echoes of both Bill Evans and Lennie Tristano, who led a similar group in the mid ‘40s. It’s curious to note that the only tune not in trio, The Call, a solo piano by Di Toro that closes the album, was composed by Yuri Goloubev.
