Press Release

Guitarist Stefano Ottogalli has finally crowned his love for jazz with this first album as a leader, after having worked for many years in different musical contexts, from soul to samba, from jazz, of course, to the songwriting of Gerardo Balestrieri or the popular music of Giovanni Dell'Olivo's Lagunaria. Precisely because it has been long meditated upon, "Colors" leaves nothing to chance, and is a faithful mirror of the Venetian guitarist's musical vision, perfectly embedded in the contemporary and at the same time deeply rooted in the African-American tradition. He is supported in the best possible way by three musicians of proven experience and talent such as the Venetian Alberto Vianello, tenor sax, Daniele Vianello, double bass, and the young Tuscan drummer Sergio Bolognesi. "Colors" brings together eight original compositions of the leader, written over the years and the result of different influences, not only musical. In fact, Stefano Ottogalli is keen to point out that the refined jazz waltz of Barlumi is inspired by a poem by Pier Paolo Pasolini, while the destabilising three-measure groove of Sereno draws inspiration from a lyric by Giuseppe Ungaretti. It was easy to imagine that the delicate ballad Shakespeare is in some way connected to the celebrated English poet and playwright, it is the leader himself who points to Sonet No. 8 as the source of inspiration and reveals that in the composition of My Shadow, a bebop-style contrafact of Cole Porter's What Is This Thing Called Love, he was inspired by a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson. The opening of the album entrusted to the title track, built on the rhythm of flamenco, while the even eight of Viaggio is the only tune played in trio without the saxophone.
