Wayne Shorter was one of the most influential saxophonists and composers of the 20th century. From the outset, Paolo Vianello and Gigi Sella found themselves asking a simple question: “how can we approach his music today, and give it new life through a recording?” Their musical research, shaped over countless duo rehearsals, gradually revealed the importance of space born from the absence of a rhythm section. Listening became central. What emerged from this long and careful process is both the result of a deep interplay and an intimate reading of the compositions, guided by a constant negotiation between density and space. «Infant Eyes» is their response and reflects the respect, devotion, and attention with which the duo approached a small portion of the vast repertoire of Wayne Shorter. Paolo Vianello is a pianist who knows how to combine refined technique with an uncommon musical sensitivity. He is highly active in both the jazz and quality pop music scenes. As well as performing alongside leading Italian jazz musicians – he has, in fact, played for many years with Sergio Caputo – he has also performed with Ornella Vanoni and Gino Paoli. Gigi Sella is a multi–saxophonist, though his instrument of choice is undoubtedly the soprano sax. No stranger to this essential and chamber–style formation – he released «Warm Up» for Caligola Records in 2003, a duo album with pianist Marco Ponchiroli – which showcases his refined lyricism, Sella has been one of the leading figures of the Veneto jazz scene for over thirty years.
