The idea of interpreting the best Italian popular song in a jazz key is not new. The Venetian saxophonist Massimo Spiro makes it his, assisted in this project by a pianist and arranger of the calibre of Marcello Tonolo. The qualities of Tonolo’s arrangements emerge even more clearly in the two instrumental tracks of the album, where the rhythm section – completed by brilliant Domenico Santaniello on double bass and Davide Ragazzoni on drums – and the leader’s saxophones are supported by an excellent wind section, which has all the characteristics of a small orchestra. Particularly successful especially Quando ti stringi a me, which brings with this sparkling arrangement by Tonolo to the best interpretation of this famous standard (I’m in Mood for Love). Just as the four vocal interpretations hit the mark, with among all Quando dico che ti amo, with a superb Carla Marcotulli capable of taking up the not easy challenge of the Monk style arrangement proposed by the pianist. «Amore baciami» is an absolutely enjoyable album, which will be appreciated by both jazz fans and lovers of the Italian popular song.
