«Finally», the debut album as leader by double bass player Domenico Santaniello, is very expected. The musician from Campania, but who has been living in the Venice area for a long time, has a rich curriculum as a sideman, being a talented instrumentalist and therefore very sought after. «Finally» has been recorded by a coherent and very close-knit quartet, completed by Marcello Tonolo on piano, Adam Pache on drums and Alfonso Deidda on alto sax. The album brings together Santaniello's most representative compositions from over the years, plus a compelling composition by Marcello Tonolo, Tipsy Topsy, performed as a trio without Deidda’s alto sax, and two standards. One, the traditional Danny Boy, is a double bass solo, the other, Seven Minds, pays homage to double bass master Sam Jones, who recorded it in trio format back in 1974. The album opens with A Song for Vanni, the leader’s most recent piece, followed by Three, a tribute to Thelonious Monk that draws inspiration from both his rhythmic drive and unpredictable melodic style. Manuè weaves together three distinct melodic themes in 7/4 time, with these ideas resurfacing throughout the piece. Santaniello wrote JFP III as a tribute to Jaco Pastorius shortly after we lost him, all too soon. The title track Finally – which is his very first composition – closes the album. It is an intimate jazz waltz whose rhythmic texture intensifies during the alto sax and piano solos, before double bass solo brings it back to its lyrical beginnings.
