Questo CD è l’esito felice di una bella storia di musica iniziata quasi per caso dieci anni fa. Alla fine di un mio concerto Elettra – che insieme a Carlotta è una delle due MADemoiselles Sarabande splendide protagoniste di questo CD – mi chiese di fare versioni a quattro mani di alcuni miei pezzi. Era un’idea bellissima cui non avevo mai pensato e che presto divenne l’inizio di una collaborazione importante fatta di grande rispetto reciproco, amicizia e, soprattutto, passione: passione per la musica, per il pianoforte e per la ricerca comune di un repertorio fuori dell’ordinario, che è sicuramente uno degli elementi caratterizzanti di “As before”. Vi troverete infatti molti brani mai ascoltati prima in versioni per piano duet e anche un brano – la title track – da me composto molto tempo fa e allestito per l'occasione in una versione per piano a quattro mani (questo brano e le varie trascrizioni presenti nel CD dimostrano chiaramente che l'idea "regalatami" una decina d'anni fa si è rivelata un seme capace di produrre buoni frutti...).
Un CD gioioso “As before”, pieno di vita, di ritmo, di gioco, come probabilmente non poteva non essere dato il felice, geniale nome – quasi un manifesto programmatico – di questo duo al suo debutto discografico. C´è tanta spensieratezza, grazia, voglia di vivere e danzare in quel nome, esattamente come ce n´è in abbondanza nelle musiche di Gershwin, Joplin, Milhaud, Nazareth e Pieranunzi presenti nel CD. Musiche che parlano di un mondo bellissimo e lontano nel tempo reso, dalle brillanti, intense interpretazioni delle MADemoiselles Sarabande, incredibilmente vicino e coinvolgente.

This CD is the successful outcome of a lovely musical story that began ten years ago almost by accident. At the end of one of my concerts, Elettra – who together with Carlotta, is one of the two MADemoiselles Sarabande, the magnificent protagonists of this CD – asked me to do four-hands piano versions of some of my pieces. It was a marvellous idea that I myself had never thought of, and that soon led to an important collaboration based on a great deal of mutual respect, friendship and above all passion: passion for music, for the piano and for the shared search for an unusual repertoire. This last element is certainly one of the most outstanding characteristics of “As before”, and on this CD you will encounter many pieces that have never been released before in four-hands piano versions. In addition to them, you will find here a piece – the title track of the CD – that I composed a long time ago and that I scored especially for the occasion in a new four-hands piano version (this piece and my transcriptions included here clearly show that the idea I was given ten years ago turned out to be a seed capable of bearing good fruit...).
“As before” is a joyful debut CD, full of life, rhythm and playfulness. Probably it couldn't have been otherwise, considering the name of this piano duet, which is almost a programme or manifesto in itself. It expresses in fact a profusion of carefree grace, joie de vivre, and the impulse to dance, all of which is also to be found in abundance in the music of Gershwin, Joplin, Milhaud, Nazareth and Pieranunzi that features on the CD. This is music that conveys the beautiful world of a distant time, which has now been made so incredibly close and engaging thanks to the brilliant, intense interpretations of the MADemoiselles Sarabande.

“Ecco le favolose MAD emoiselles Sarabande!”: così una mattina di molti anni fa Enrico Pieranunzi ci accolse in testa al binario 12 (ebbene si, ricordiamo il numero del binario) della stazione Termini. Allora ebbe inizio il nostro viaggio a quattro mani (più due...).
Un'avventura fatta di tanta emozione, passione e, talvolta, un po' di sana frustrazione.
Le sessioni di studio, l'ansia che viene dal sapere che i microfoni ti stanno registrando, gli energici consigli tecnico musicali del Maestro Pieranunzi: tutto questo ci ha messo duramente alla prova, é vero, ma è stato utilissimo per farci matturare e diventare molto più sicure di noi.
Adesso, in fondo al cuore, custodiamo una profonda riconoscenza per il tempo, la dedizione e la generosità senza confini di un Maestro, di un amico sincero che ci ha portato per mano “oltre” il pianoforte, là dove vive la musica.

“Ah, so you are the fabulous MAD emoiselles Sarabande!” Those were the words with which Enrico Pieranunzi greeted us one morning many years ago at the end of platform 12 (yes... we actually still remember the platform number!) of Termini station in Rome. It was then that our four-handed (plus two...) journey began.
It would soon prove to be a great adventure, with a lot of emotion, passion and sometimes a sprinkling of healthy frustration.
The study sessions, the anxiety of knowing that the microphones are switched on, and the energetic musical advices of Maestro Pieranunzi: all of this tested us to the limits, it's true, but it was also very useful indeed for helping us to mature and to become much more sure of ourselves.
Now we both feel a deep sense of appreciation from the bottom of our hearts for all the time, boundless dedication and generosity kindly offered to us by a Maestro who is also a genuine friend; someone who took us by the hand and led us “beyond” the piano, to the place where music truly comes to life.
