“Quiet Man”, il nuovo lavoro di Enrico Bracco
Un’immagine nitida con la melodia in primo piano

Sullo sfondo, il jazz newyorkese delle ultime generazioni. In primo piano, la melodia. La fotografia di “Quiet Man”, il nuovo lavoro del chitarrista Enrico Bracco appena uscito per Auand Records, è chiara e nitida. Eppure, come tutte le immagini d’autore, basta guardare un po’ più da vicino per ritrovare dettagli, colori e storie che, in questo caso, emergono ascolto dopo ascolto.

Influenzato dai lavori di Kurt Rosenwinkel, Brian Blade, Mike Moreno e soprattutto Logan Richardson, Bracco ha messo a punto uno stile compositivo che rende i suoi brani elegantemente stratificati: melodie orecchiabili e linee morbide (come in “L’esegeta” e “La Regola”) svelano percorsi impervi e spigolosi e si posano su arrangiamenti curati, tutti caratterizzati da un forte equilibrio che dà al disco una matrice molto personale, anche nei brani dalle atmosfere un po’ più scure (“Childhood Lost”). Il leader ha firmato le dieci composizioni originali (più una bonus track disponibile solo in digitale) che compongono il disco, ma l’omogeneità del suono è il frutto di un lavoro comune che coinvolge tutta la band che lo accompagna: Daniele Tittarelli (sax alto, flauto), Pietro Lussu (piano), Luca Fattorini (contrabbasso) e Enrico Morello (batteria).

Il percorso iniziato con il precedente “Unresolved”, con un nuovo approccio alla composizione, è ora ancora più definito. È lo stesso Bracco a descriverlo nelle note di copertina: “Facendo un parallelo con l’arte figurativa, penso ai disegni dell’artista austriaco Egon Schiele: un tratto che ha in sé la spigolosità e la morbidezza, i chiari e gli scuri; una linea che annulla la bidimensionalità, suggerendo piani e volumi”.

“Quiet Man” è proprio questo: un’immagine che racconta nuove storie a chi ha voglia di avvicinarsi e stare ad ascoltare

Enrico Bracco’s new album “Quiet Man”
A bright picture focused on melody

The freshest New York jazz in the background, melody in the foreground. The picture of “Quiet Man”, Italian guitarist Enrico Bracco’s new work recently released by Auand Records, is crystal clear. However, as in most art photography, you just have to look a bit closer and you’ll see details, colors and stories emerge, track by track.

Deeply influenced by Kurt Rosenwinkel, Brian Blade, Mike Moreno and, most importantly, Logan Richardson, Bracco has fine tuned a style that makes his compositions gracefully stratified: catchy melodies and mellow lines (“L’esegeta” and “La Regola”) unveil arduous and angular paths and lie on well-finished arrangements, all of which show a balance that marks the whole work with a personal sound, even in darker tracks (“Childhood Lost”).

Bracco had penned all 10 compositions (11 in the digital version), and this newly achieved sound uniformity is the result of a team work, involving all band members: Daniele Tittarelli (alto sax alto, flute), Pietro Lussu (piano), Luca Fattorini (double bass) and Enrico Morello (drums).

This new phase – that started with his previous album “Unresolved” – is now even clearer. Bracco himself describes it in the lines notes: “In a comparison with figurative arts, I'm thinking about Austrian artist Egon Schiele's drawings: his lines have an inner angularity and softness, bright and dark tones. They cancel the two-dimentional aspect and suggest both flat surfaces and volumes.”

This is “Quiet Man”: a picture telling new stories to those who want to come closer and listen.

Questa volta anziché importunare una famosa star del “Jazz set” per farmi scrivere le liner notes ho deciso di scrivere io due righe da allegare al disco. Nella ricerca di una frase che riassumesse la mia musica mi è venuta in mente questa: l’energia implicita della linea.
Facendo un parallelo con l’arte figurativa penso ai disegni dell’artista austriaco Egon Schiele: un tratto che ha in sé la spigolosità e la morbidezza, i chiari e gli scuri; una linea che annulla la bidimensionalità, suggerendo piani e volumi.
Le composizioni contenute in questo disco si sviluppano attorno ad un nucleo principale: la linea melodica. È questa difatti a determinare gli aspetti musicali legati al suono, l’armonia e il ritmo. Di qui la presenza di metriche spesso irregolari e di progressioni armoniche dal tracciato desueto, ardue da eseguire ma semplici all’ascolto, data la notevole cantabilità delle melodie. Tutto ciò era già in nuce in “Unresolved”, brano contenuto nel mio precedente disco e che rivela la decisa influenza della musica del sassofonista statunitense Logan Richardson
Le due tracce “L’esegeta” e “La regola”, pensate come fossero una suite, presentano un aspetto più cameristico del mio modo di scrivere; in particolare sono ispirate alle composizioni per chitarra di Villa Lobos e Leo Brouwer.
Questo disco lo dedico a mio figlio Riccardo, un “Quiet man” inquieto come me.

This time, I went for adding my two cents myself, rather than bothering some big "Jazz-Set" star about writing the liner notes for my new album. While thinking about a sentence that could sum up my music, this one came to my mind: the implicit energy of the line.
In a comparison with figurative arts, I'm thinking about Austrian artist Egon Schiele's drawings: his stroke has an inner angularity and softness, bright and dark tones. His line cancels the two-dimentional aspect and suggests both flat surfaces and volumes.
The compositions in this album develop around a main core: the melody line. This is what affects the musical aspects related to sound, harmony and rhythm. Hence, the use of often irregular beats and disused chord progressions, both hard to play and easy to enjoy, given such easy-to-sing melodies. All this was already there, in nuce, in “Unresolved,” a track included in my previous work, revealing the U.S. saxophone player Logan Richardson's deep influence.
Two more tracks, “L’esegeta” and “La regola,” conceived as a suite, show a more chamber-music-oriented approach in my writing. More precisely, they are inspired by Villa Lobos' and Leo Browver's compositions for guitar.

This album is dedicated to my son, Riccardo, a restless "Quiet Man", just like me.
