“Stopping”, dal pianoforte di Giulio Stermieri
un jazz in equilibrio sul filo del presente
Il pianista torna a incidere con Auand Records nel suo debutto da leader
con Giacomo Marzi al contrabbasso e Andrea Burani alla batteria.

Dopo avere esordito in casa Auand con il quartetto jazz-rock Foursome nel 2016, il pianista Giulio Stermieri ritorna con “Stopping” il suo primo disco da leader per la Piano Series dell’etichetta pugliese, a capo di un trio che coinvolge Giacomo Marzi al contrabbasso e Andrea Burani alla batteria.

Alla base del lavoro c’è un’idea molto precisa di equilibrio: non solo formale o sonoro, ma anche legato alle numerose tradizioni del jazz. Per dirla con le parole del pianista: «È un ritratto piuttosto fedele della mia idea di jazz oggi. Del jazz che mi piace e, soprattutto, del jazz che ritengo possa essere musica per il presente. Senza nostalgie, senza citazionismi, con onestà nel confronto con i grandi del passato, Paul Bley su tutti».

Dietro la formazione c’è proprio lo zampino del pianista canadese: il trio è nato per un concerto di laurea incentrato sulla figura di Bley, ma con il passare del tempo ha dato occasione ai componenti di approfondire con precisione quasi maniacale il repertorio, riarrangiato e cesellato per ottenere un suono condiviso e soppesato nei dettagli. Il lavoro d’insieme poteva contare su una visione comune del jazz, che nelle sette tracce dell’album sa imporsi con freschezza. Lo dimostra il piglio deciso di ‘King Korn’, l’abilità nel giocare con le dinamiche (‘You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To’), o la capacità di immergersi in un interplay vivace e sorprendente (‘Una Muy Bonita’). Fra brani di Thelonious Monk, Cole Porter e Ornette Coleman, il pianoforte non indugia in scelte facili, ma non teme di farsi ora orecchiabile e invitante, ora aggressivo e tagliente. Il contrabbasso di Giacomo Marzi si ritaglia un ruolo da protagonista in ‘52nd Street Theme’ con un approccio melodico che muta gradualmente fino a farsi sempre più febbrile, mentre la batteria di Andrea Burani gioca sapientemente con pieni e vuoti (‘Once Around The Park’), tessendo una tela leggera che circonda il trio senza imbrigliarlo in uno spazio definito.

La cura nella preparazione di “Stopping” ha permesso al gruppo non solo di incidere, ma di mixare e chiudere completamente il disco in una sola giornata: «Per noi – confida Stermieri – è stata la conferma di quanto il disco fosse il documento di un lavoro compiuto e di quanto avessimo le idee chiare sul suono che desideravamo per il trio».

 After his debut on Auand Records with jazz-rock quartet Foursome in 2016, Italian pianist Giulio Stermieri is back with “Stopping”, his first album as leader on the label’s Piano Series with a trio featuring Giacomo Marzi on double bass and Andrea Burani on drums.

At the core of this work is a clear idea of balance: not only related to form or sound, but also to various jazz traditions. In the pianist’s own words: «It’s a rather accurate portrait of my idea of today’s jazz, of the jazz I like and, most importantly, of the jazz I believe can be a music for our times. Without nostalgia, and frank enough with the giants of the past, such as Paul Bley.»

A shadow of the Canadian pianist can be seen behind the band: this trio was born around a graduation concert focused on Mr. Bley, and the time needed has given the members enough chances to examine in depth his repertoire, rearranging it and retouching it in order to get a fully-detailed shared sound. The common work could count on an unanimous vision of jazz, freshly outlined by the seven tracks in the album. It can be found in the determination behind ‘King Korn’, in the ability to either play with dynamics (‘You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To’), or dive in a lively and surprising interplay (‘Una Muy Bonita’).

Among compositions by Thelonious Monk, Cole Porter and Ornette Coleman, the piano does not seek for easy choices, and is not afraid of sounding catchy and inviting, or aggressive and sharp at times. Giacomo Manzi’s double bass makes shines on ‘52nd Street Theme’ with his melodic approach, gradually evolving to get more and more feverish, while Andrea Burani on drums plays masterfully with space (‘Once Around The Park’), putting together a light canvas that surrounds the trio without curbing it.

The care in the making of “Stopping” has allowed the band to record, mix and finish the album in one day, but there’s more: «To each of us – Stermieri says – it was the confirmation of this album being the result of a defined work and our ideas being clear on the sound we wish for this trio».
