Ten years after his premature passing, a solo piano recital by British master John Taylor is set for release. A major figure in the free jazz movement of the 1970s, Taylor was a member of Azimuth with then-wife Norma Winstone and trumpeter Kenny Wheeler. He went on to become a highly regarded composer for ensembles, but it is in his solo music that his true personality comes through most strongly: quiet, deceptively unemphatic, combining freedom with a deep respect for vernacular melody, at all times communicative.This is a historic release by a very significant modern musician whose posthumous reputation stands as high as anyone’s in the field of jazz piano. Dieci anni dopo la prematura scomparsa di John Taylor, è pronto per la pubblicazione il disco di un concerto per pianosolo del grande artista britannico. Figura di spicco del movimentofree jazzdegli anni ’70 del secolo scorso, Taylor faceva parte del trio Azimuth insieme a Norma Winstone, all’epoca sua moglie, e al trombettista Kenny Wheeler. Lui proseguì il suo percorso diventando un compositore molto apprezzato che collaborava con vari gruppi, ma è con la sua produzione insoloche la sua vera personalità emerge alla massima potenza: pacato, privo di enfasi solo all’apparenza, artefice della fusione tra libertà e profondo rispetto per la melodia “popolare”, sempre comunicativo. Questo è un album storico di un musicista moderno di altissimo valore la cui fama postuma ha raggiunto il livello di altri maestri del piano jazz. Un’opera fondamentale, sia per gli ammiratori affezionati che per quelli più recenti.(Brian Morton)
