Questo omaggio a Thelonious Monk, che nasce da un'idea di Michele Fattori in relazione al primo disco Gavagai, vuole essere una rappresentazione delle dinamiche del suono e della musica che si dipanano con l'intervento intimo di due esecutori.
Se in Gavagai la matrice è la piena libertà improvvisativa, che viene realizzata senza alcun canovaccio esecutivo, in questo disco si esalta il rapporto tra lo stile inteso come idea e la reinterpretazione dello stile, in un modo che si dipana tra il bianco e nero sottolineando i grigi e le sfumature sonore personalissime, tempi dilatati e spazi contemplativi, che permettono di aumentare la libertà improvvisativa e la scelta
precisa di un'interpretazione libera dagli stessi dettati stilistici di Thelonious Monk. Ecco così che si giustifica il titolo, che gioca anche con il nome dello stesso compositore, facendo sì che possa esservi un rimando moderno al canto gregoriano come nella composizione iniziale, oltre alla totale rivisitazione di alcuni pezzi celeberrimi, che rimangono tali nell'esposizione del tema e nelle strutture, pur essendo chiaramente l'andamento sonoro libero dallo stile e dai clichés del grande autore statunitense. Il disco si conclude con una composizione, non a caso un Blues, di Michele Fattori. Una stesura armonica e melodica che tiene conto dell'opera di Monk, cercando con la stessa ironia e la stessa precisione compositiva di essere una piccola innovazione che appunto nasce dalle sfumature che si assiepano infinite tra trascendenza e contingenza. This tribute to Thelonious Monk, which is the brainchild of Michele Fattori in relation to the first album Gavagai, is intended to be a representation of the dynamics of sound and music unraveling with the intimate intervention of two performers.
If in Gavagai the matrix is full improvisational freedom, which is carried out without any executive canvas, in this album the relationship between the style understood as an idea and the reinterpretation of the style is exalted, in a way that unravels between black and white emphasizing the very personal gray and sound nuances, dilated tempos and contemplative spaces, which allow for increased improvisational freedom and the
precise choice of an interpretation free from the same stylistic dictates of Thelonious Monk. This is how the title, which also plays with the composer's own name, is justified, making it possible for there to be a modern reference to Gregorian chant as in the initial composition, as well as the total reinterpretation of some celebrated pieces, which remain as such in the exposition of the theme and structures, while clearly being the sonic trend free from the style and clichés of the great American composer. The album concludes with a composition, not surprisingly a Blues, by Michele Fattori. A harmonic and melodic drafting that takes Monk's work into account, seeking with the same irony and compositional precision to be a small innovation that precisely arises from the nuances that endlessly assemble between transcendence and contingency. Between tradition and avant-garde. Between The Idea, History and its (re)execution, its actualization in the contemporary.
