The pianist Marco Ponchiroli and the saxophonist Marco Castelli, both Venetian, have for years been among the most talented and original protagonists of the Italian jazz scene. They recorded a lot of albums for our label, but this is a very special work. This is a production that combines research, selection, and elaboration work of the highest level with the "restitution" on the executive level that is rich not only in taste and style, but also in delightful insights. Our two musicians have embarked on an intense journey among great composers: from Beethoven, Chopin, Tchaikowski, Schumann, Scriabin, Verdi, Händel to Ellington, Jobim, Piazzolla, Morricone and John Williams; from classical music to soundtracks, from the jazz songbook to the world of 20th century South American composers. At the end of this long exploration, which is clearly an experience not only of analysis, but of corresponding inner resonances, Castelli and Ponchiroli chose 12 pieces, compositions of different genres from different periods and geographic locations.12 themes that reveal their artistic personalities and a kind of musical elective affinity gained through years of collaborations and joint projects.
It is a well-balanced production, both in its search for a coherent musical and expressive dimension that does away with those same differences in space, era and genre of the pieces and by introducing into the performance continuous points of reflection and variations of harmonic, rhythmic and "narrative" elements that are always, and in any case inspired, never superfluous or contrived. Music to "treasure" and take with you, each to his own desert island...
