Press Release

In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s the brothers Marcello and Pietro Tonolo, born in 1955 and 1959 respectively and jazz musicians who need no introduction, led Jazz Studio, a dynamic quartet well-known in the Venetian area, even though it left no recordings. Over the next decades both of them have carried out their own careers successfully, and only rarely have they collaborated on shared musical projects (that happened with Keptorchestra, for example).
They have recorded many albums under their own names (Marcello has released at least a dozen through Caligola), but it’s the first time they’ve made one together as co-leaders. Playing with them on this occasion are Nicolò Masetto, a very young but already appreciated double bass player, and a veteran of Venetian jazz, drummer Massimo Chiarella.

The album opens with two tracks much different from each other: Il Sottoscala, by Pietro, a composition evoking the atmosphere of New York, and Quiet City, Marcello’s breezy, modern bop–inspired theme. In Acqualta it’s interesting to listen to its composer Pietro playing the flute masterfully and right after grasp the soprano sax in The Gift, a song by his brother which precedes his Arnold Sings the Blues, the latter track a sort of “dodecaphonic” blues where Pietro goes back to the instrument which made him justly famous even beyond our borders: tenor sax, as sinuous and feline as ever. The saxophonist’s rapid changes of instruments give much chromatic alteration, but also an extremely cohesive and involving sound to the quartet–with–sax–and–piano combination which may sound a little too predictable.

The last four tunes are all composed by Marcello. Pietro’s flute once again lights up the dancing and joyous Eucalypso, while the pianist’s personal style, recognizable in both La talpa and Ace, perhaps peaks in Remembering Steve, a ballad dedicated to Steve Grossman and performed as duo. It closes in the best of ways an album marking a significant stage in the long and fruitful artistic careers of the Tonolo brothers.
