And The Beat Goes On recitava una celebre hit dei Whispers della fine degli anni ’70. Altri tempi. Un epoca in cui la disco music mieteva vittime nei dance club di tutto il pianeta. Molti hanno associato a quella canzone tutto un immaginario fatto di lustrini, di champagne, di vita vissuta in superficie. Pochi compresero che la questione del tempo, del battito stava alla musica nera come il ciclo di Krebs sta al processo di respirazione cellulare. Qualcosa senza la quale semplicemente quel mondo non sarebbe esistito. Il battito nella black music è linfa vitale sin da tempi ancestrali, nella musica africana, nel jazz, nel blues ed è quel particolare che, gestito nella giusta maniera, ha impreziosito l’ottanta per cento delle produzioni musicali della seconda metà del secolo scorso. L’hip-hop, il reggae, l’r&b e, in tempi più recenti, il dub step e il più moderno trap, senza quel battito non avrebbero senso. Questo lavoro della vocalist Francesca Sortino parte da lì, da quel battito. Se non si sapesse che Francesca vive a Roma e che la sua storia parte dal jazz si potrebbe pensare che le sonorità di questo lavoro siano state concepite in qualche studio di Los Angeles o di Miami. Invece “Be Free” è nato tra Roma e Bari, a sud, dall’incontro di alcune delle personalità musicali più vivaci di tutto il panorama peninsulare. Un lavoro moderno in cui si mischiano l’amore per il jazz e per tutto il variegato mondo della black music (à la Erykah Badu tanto per fare un nome e per intenderci) ma anche per una elettronica che non perde di vista, mai, il senso della musicalità. Per Francesca e per i suo compagni di viaggio the beat still goes on. 

'And The Beat Goes On' was a famous hit for The Whispers at the end of the '70s. Other times! An epoch when disco music entranced its devotees in clubs world-wide. Many have associated the song with a superficial existence of glamour and champagne, but fewer have understood that tempo and beat are as essential to black music as cellular respiration is to organic life.??Beat has been the life-blood of black music since ancestral times, in African music, in jazz, in blues, and is that essential component which, correctly used, animates 80% of the musical production of the second half of the last century. Hip-hop, reggae, R&B, and more recently dubstep and trap all owe their power to beat. ??Beat is the starting point of Francesca Sortino's music. If you didn't know that Francesca lives in Rome and that her story is rooted in jazz, you could easily imagine that the music of this album was created in a studio in Los Angeles or Miami. In reality 'Be Free' was born in the Italian south between Rome and Bari, through the encounter of a group of cutting-edge musicians. A modern work in which love for jazz blends with the diverse world of black music (mention of the name Erykah Badu will help to explain), where the use of electronics never loses sight of musicality.??For Francesca and her companions on the journey the beat still goes on.
