Il cosiddetto Jazz Italiano – sarebbe meglio usare la dizione di “jazz suonato in Italia” – ha perso, da un po’ di tempo, buona parte del suo appeal mediatico. Certo i nostri connazionali sono, tra i musicisti di jazz, quelli che maggiormente si distinguono per un approccio melodico sofisticato e anche per un certo tipo di linguaggio in cui si fa sentire forte l’influenza del melodramma o comunque di una cantabilità spiccata che in molti casi riesce a salvare situazioni altrimenti difficili da imporre all’attenzione di un mercato che, oggi più che mai, si fa sempre più complicato da gestire. E se un po’ di tempo fa in tutta la penisola, da nord a sud, riuscivano ad imporsi personalità in cui il jazz si mischiava a caratteristiche territoriali contingenti (il jazz, si sa, è una spugna, che assorbe tutto quello con cui viene a contatto) oggi è Roma a rappresentare, con i musicisti del suo milieu, buona parte della creatività improvvisativa che caratterizza da sempre questa musica. Ed è una creatività che pesca a piene mani in un modo di suonare che si fa fortemente influenzare dalla mentalità che detta legge a New York e, di conseguenza, in tutto il mondo: farsi le ossa sulla tradizione cercando di sviluppare la propria personalità ma senza scantonare da certi dettami che da sempre fanno parte delle “regole” – se così possiamo chiamarle – dell’idioma afroamericano, e quindi lo swing e il groove. Il nostro catalogo prende spunto da questo vivaio e oggi si arricchisce di una nuova presenza, quella del chitarrista Enrico Bracco un signore che vanta un curriculum di tutto rispetto con esperienze in cui la musica va a braccetto con il teatro, il cinema, la televisione. Questo è il suo quinto disco da leader e il suo flirt con la mentalità statunitense è da subito ben evidente non solo nella musica ma anche nella scelta dei collaboratori come quelli coinvolti nel quintetto che ha contribuito a realizzare “Flying In A Box”, un lavoro in cui l’amore per la melodia e la conoscenza del lessico del jazz vanno insieme, in una maniera molto vicina a quella cosa che tutti siamo abituati a chiamare “equilibrio”. Sono il fiore all’occhiello del jazz peninsulare moderno: Daniele Tittarelli al sax alto, Pietro Lussu al pianoforte, Giuseppe Romagnoli al contrabbasso, Enrico Morello alla batteria.

The so-called Italian Jazz - it would be better to use the term "jazz played in Italy" - has lost much of its media appeal for some time. Of course, our compatriots are, among jazz musicians, those who are most distinguished by a sophisticated melodic approach and also by a certain type of language in which the influence of melodrama or in any case of a marked cantability is felt strongly that in many cases manages to save situations that would otherwise be difficult to impose on the attention of a market that, today more than ever, is becoming more and more complicated to manage. And if some time ago all over the peninsula, from north to south, personalities were able to establish themselves in which jazz mixed with contingent territorial characteristics (jazz, you know, is a sponge, which absorbs everything with which it comes in contact) today it is Rome that represents, with the musicians of its milieu, a good part of the improvisational creativity that has always characterized this music. And it is a creativity that fishes with both hands in a way of playing that is strongly influenced by the mentality that dictates the law in New York and, consequently, all over the world: getting to grips with tradition trying to develop one's personality but without avoid certain dictates that have always been part of the "rules" - if we can call them that - of the African American language, and therefore swing and groove. Our catalog takes its cue from this nursery and today is enriched with a new presence, that of the guitarist Enrico Bracco, a gentleman who boasts a very respectable curriculum with experiences in which music goes hand in hand with theater, cinema, television. This is his fifth album as a leader and his flirtation with the American mentality is immediately evident not only in the music but also in the choice of collaborators such as those involved in the quintet that helped to create "Flying In A Box", a work in which the love for melody and the knowledge of the jazz lexicon go together, in a way very close to what we are all used to calling “balance”. They are the flagship of modern peninsular jazz: Daniele Tittarelli on alto sax, Pietro Lussu on piano, Giuseppe Romagnoli on double Bass, Enrico Morello on drums.
