A partire dalla seconda metà degli anni cinquanta il flauto inizia ad assumere nelle incisioni di jazz il compito di esprimere con note alte, leggere, gioconde quello che il clarinetto aveva espresso nell’epoca dello swing. Fino a quel momento il flauto nelle note di copertina dei dischi veniva citato alla voce “altri strumenti”. Da Frank Wess e Bud Shank in poi passando attraverso Sam Most, Herbie Mann, Yusef Lateef sino ad arrivare a Sahib Shihab, James Moody, Roland Kirk e finire a Eric Dolphy e Sam Rivers (ma si potrebbero fare tanti altri nomi) il flauto ha assunto una sua autonomia. Probabilmente l’avvento dei microfoni ha creato le condizioni tecniche grazie alle quali questo strumento – svantaggiato nella competizione con la tromba o con il sassofono il cui suono penetrante lo sovrastava nelle sale da ballo degli anni venti e trenta – ha iniziato ad essere utilizzato come strumento solista in maniera adeguata. Milena Jancuric (Novi Sad, Serbia) è una flautista doc, per intenderci non una musicista che è arrivata a suonarlo passando attraverso il sassofono o il clarinetto (e se l’ha fatto se n’è subito distaccata) con una formazione accademica e una frequentazione degli ambienti statunitensi (Berklee College Of Music). La nostra etichetta si è accorta del suo talento quando ha deciso di pubblicare il disco della sua conterranea Sanja Markovic, apprezzando in particolare il suo approccio “aperto” scevro da sovrastrutture e condizionamenti. Milena è intensa e leggera nello stesso tempo e riesce con la sua sensibilità a farci superare quel pregiudizio che vuole che il timbro del flauto sia troppo ornamentale e frivolo. Tutto “Shapes And Stories” è intriso non solo di una conoscenza profonda delle possibilità dello strumento ma anche di una consapevolezza e di una conoscenza del lessico jazzistico straordinarie. Le due ballads finali, Blue Sparrow Dark Eyes e Dreams In You sintetizzano con le loro sonorità quello che vogliamo esprimere con le nostre parole. Ascoltare per rendersene conto

Starting from the second half of the 1950’s the flute began to take on the task of expressing with high, light, cheerful notes what the clarinet had expressed in the swing era in jazz recordings. Until that moment the flute in the liner notes of the records was mentioned under the heading “other instruments”. From Frank Wess and Bud Shank onward, through Sam Most, Herbie Mann, Yusef Lateef, Sahib Shihab, James Moody, Roland Kirk all the way to Eric Dolphy and Sam Rivers the flute has assumed its autonomy. Probably the advent of microphones created the technical conditions thanks to which this instrument – disadvantaged in competition with the trumpet or the saxophone whose penetrating sound dominated in the ballrooms of the twenties and thirties – began to be used as an instrument soloist adequately. Milena Jancuric, from Novi Sad, Serbia, is a true flutist, so to speak not a musician who came to play it through the saxophone or the clarinet, with an academic training and a frequentation of American circles (Berklee College of Music). Our label became aware of her talent when we released the album by her compatriot Sanja Markovic, appreciating especially, her “open” approach free from superstructures and conditioning. Milena is intense and light at the same time and with her sensitivity she manages to make us overcome the prejudice that wants the flute timbre to be ornamental and frivolous. All “Shapes And Stories” is imbued not only with a deep knowledge of the possibilities of the instrument but also with an extraordinary knowledge of the jazz lexicon. The two final ballads “Blue Sparrow Dark Eyes” and “Dreams In You” synthetize with their sounds what we want to express with our words. Listening is believing.
