Fourteen years after the release of «Bricolage», his first album as a leader, again with a quartet, but with Riccardo Chiarion on guitar instead of piano – although in 2019 «Geography» had been released by Artesuono, a trio recording without a harmonic instrument – Mauro Darpin sent us a new recording and asked whether Caligola Records would be interested in releasing it. I then discovered that the same close–knit rhythm section – consisting of Alessandro Turchet on double bass and Luca Colussi on drums – is playing here, with Gianpaolo Rinaldi on piano joining them this time. After listening to it and expressing my appreciation, we began discussing the timing and details of this renewed collaboration. We had just received the first graphic design drafts when, last December, we learned of Mauro’s unexpected and tragic passing. The news came as a bolt from the blue, and we set the project aside. A few months later, encouraged by Claudio, Mauro’s brother, and by the musicians who had played on «Clear View», Caligola finally decided to complete what had been left unfinished. We like to propose below the short liner notes that Mauro had written to present this new album of his. “The quartet performs a repertoire consisting entirely of original compositions of mine, freely inspired by modal jazz and rooted in a harmonic approach based on George Russell’s landmark treatise «The Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization». The result is ten pieces that alternate between swing rhythms, odd and more complex time signatures, bossa nova grooves, and occasional touches of funk. The common thread running through these varied and eclectic musical settings is the same harmonic approach, characterized by modal areas in the compositions and by the ample room left for improvisation”.
