Born in Messina in 1967, Domenico Caliri has been one of the leading figures on the Bologna jazz scene since 1990 and one of the most active members of the Bassesfere collective. It was through Bassesfere that he recorded the first Cal Trio album, «Casa 3», in 2002. The group, completed by  Antonio Borghini on double bass and Cristiano Calcagnile on drums, released its second album, «Do ut do», with Caligola in 2007. Caliri’s reputation grew considerably in 1994, when he joined Enrico Rava’s new quintet, Electric Five, with which he performed until 1998 and recorded four albums. «Quarto» carries a double meaning: it is the fourth album by the Cal Trio and, at the same time, the first to feature a fourth member, pianist Fabrizio Puglisi, whom Domenico Caliri has known since the early 1990s and with whom he has shared many invaluable musical adventures. It is the trio’s fourth album, however, only if we do not take into account «Il buio acceso» (2009, Caligola), on which the trio was joined by a string quartet. Over the following decade, the members of the Cal Trio changed, with Stefano Senni replacing Borghini and Marco Frattini taking Calcagnile’s place. It was not until «Aria mossa», released in 2018, that the progress made by the new lineup could finally be heard on record. The Sicilian guitarist is not a particularly prolific recording artist: he records new music only when he is fully satisfied with the results he has achieved. For this very reason, «Quarto», his new release arriving a full eight years after the previous one, with the same lineup but the addition of a fourth member, Fabrizio Puglisi, naturally raises expectations. We are certain, however, that they will not be disappointed in the slightest. All ten tracks on the album were composed by Caliri.
