No bass–and–drum team like the one of Alessandro Turchet, double bass, and Luca Colussi, drums, has worked longer with pianist Claudio Cojaniz. They are much younger than the leader, but perfectly in tune with his musical vision.The trio’s first recording dates back to 2010 and produced «The Heart of the Universe». The group then became a quartet with the addition of percussionist Luca Grizzo and released  four albums in five years, from the extended project «Si Song» (2016), with a brass section and special guest Alexander Balanescu, to the most recent «Orphans» (2021). After having also tried the formula of the duo with Alessandro Turchet («Madeleine», 2024), the pianist from Friuli returns with «Cracking» to his "first love", the trio. This work is dedicated to two friends of Roccella Jonica – a village in Calabria where Cojaniz lived for three years – who died prematurely, one after the other, between 2023 and 2024 (Toni e Maurizio is a delicate ballad with their own names). Well supported by Turchet and Colussi, the leader's piano, with relaxed ease, passes through the moods that characterise his jazz. We move from the initial and ambivalent Carafa Sphere, magically suspended between Thelonious Monk and an African lullaby, to the more sustained rhythms of Piazza San Vittorio, close to the rhythmic cadences of a South African dance; but also from the simple but deep Old Blues to the sudden changes in rhythm of the more contemporary Big Sure. Throughout the recording session there is a balance and an interplay that place this trio at the top of today Italian jazz. All the albums mentioned, like this one, were released by Caligola Records.
