Not only is Bruno Tommaso one of the greatest jazz composers in Italy, but also one of our best and influential teachers. His role is to elucidate, clarify and make explicit what is hidden or obscure. And yet his music is replete with references, quotes, symbols, double entendres but most of all, hidden stories: the more it sounds clear and involving, the more it hides obscure meanings. This album is a tribute to his mastery and talent that Barga Jazz Festival – which he himself helped create – wanted to make him. We are facing nine original and unpublished tunes, which put one after the other appear as a suite, performed by a ten–piece ensemble derived from Barga Big Band. Among his outstanding soloists, we cannot mention the pianist Stefano Onorati, the trombonist Roberto Rossi, the drummer Walter Paoli, clarinetists and saxophonists Nico Gori and Rossano Emili. If this ambitious project could be realized the credit goes also to the saxophonist Alessandro Rizzardi, current artistic director of the Barga Jazz Festival, the only one in Italy to have a composition and arrangement contest for jazz big band. «Dagli Appennini alle Madonie» is a very successful album, capable of admirably mixing jazz with Italian popular music, which we are sure will win back to Bruno Tommaso the attention and the recognition he deserves.
