Dopo aver completato il mio ultimo progetto discografico, realizzato in solo nel 2018 (“Zen #4”, AlfaMusic 2019) il mio desiderio più sentito era quello di tornare a lavorare regolarmente con un gruppo di musicisti.

Ho sempre amato suonare con Luca Valente e Mario Sereno (con cui registrammo un omaggio a Prince nel 2018) e quindi formare il nuovo quartetto è stato relativamente facile: aggiungete nel calderone il basso elettrico di Alessandro Loi, ed ecco che tutto funziona a meraviglia!

La mia aspirazione era quella di realizzare un album poliedrico, ricco delle tante suggestioni musicali che amo: il jazz ma anche il funk, il sound di Tulsa ma anche i classici western, Joe Zawinul e gli Hammond trio contemporanei.

Purtroppo, viviamo in un’era in cui per essere riconosciuti bisogna essere molto specifici e sapere tutto di un preciso micro-argomento, che è un approccio di una noia mortale. Io, da sempre, preferisco i musicisti eclettici, come lo sono stati quelli che amo: da Miles Davis ai Beatles a Jeff Beck, per fare tre esempi di artisti che (senza volermi neanche lontanamente paragonare!) hanno reso la musica l’emanazione di quello che sono stati: dunque arte e non manierismo tout court.

L’ ALBERO DELLA VITA del titolo è un concetto caro a molte culture diverse: collega tutte le forme della creazione, ed è, insieme all’albero della conoscenza (che unisce il mondo dei vivi all’oltretomba) una forma dell’albero cosmico. Molti miti sono associati a questo simbolo. Per citarne qualcuno: una storia taoista narra che quest’albero produce ogni tremila anni una pesca che rende immortale chi la mangia, mentre nella Bibbia compare nella Genesi (nel giardino dell’Eden) e nell’Apocalisse, nell’ultimo capitolo, nel nuovo giardino del Paradiso. Gli indiani irochesi narravano (“The World On The Turtle’s Back”) di come il mondo fosse nato quando una donna piantò la corteccia dell’albero della vita sulla schiena di una tartaruga che l’aveva salvata dall’annegamento. L’albero della vita è, in sintesi, simbolo di nascita e rinascita. In generale mi sembra un bel simbolo per il mondo post Covid, e personalmente mi rappresenta per la mia voglia di cambiamento, stimolata sia dalla mia ineffabile curiosità, sia dall’aver compiuto 50 anni. After completing my last album in 2018 (“Zen #4”,AlfaMusic 2019), the one thing I wanted more than anything was to return to working regularly with a group of musicians.

I’ve always loved playing with Luca Valente and Mario Sereno (we recorded an homage to Prince in 2018 together) so forming a new quartet was relatively easy. Just throw Alessandro Loi’s electric bass into the mix, and everything works fantastically!

My aspiration was to create a multifaceted album, rich in the influence of all the music that I love: jazz, but also funk; the Tulsa sound, but also country western; Joe Zawinul, but also the contemporary Hammond Trios.

Unfortunately, we live in an era where you have to be very specific and know micro-details about a topic in order to be recognized. I find this approach to be death by boredom! I’ve always preferred eclectic musicians, like the ones I love from Miles Davis to the Beatles to Jeff Beck, to name 3 examples of artists who (without even remotely comparing myself to them) have made music the expression of who they were.

THE TREE OF LIFE mentioned in the title is a concept dear to many different cultures. It connects all forms of creation and it is, along with the tree of knowledge (that unites the world of the living with the afterlife), a form of the cosmic tree. There are many myths associated with this symbol. To name a few: a Taoist story tells of a tree that produces a peach once every three thousand years that makes whoever eats it become immortal. While in the Bible, the tree appears in Genesis (in the Garden of Eden) and in The Book Of Revelation (in the last chapter in the New Garden of Paradise). And the Iroquois of North America tell of “The World On The Turtle’s Back”, how the world was born when a woman planted the bark from the tree of life on the back of a turtle she saved from drowning. To put it simply, the tree of life symbolizes birth and rebirth. In general, I think this is a nice symbol for the post-Covid world, and personally it represents me and my desire for change. Stimulated by both my insatiable curiosity and by having just turned 50. All the better!
