Press Release
Roberto De Nittis’s new recording project, «Sextuor», is conceived as an anthology of sonic miniatures. The album – his third as a leader, following «Dada» (2019) and «Maé» (2023), both released by Caligola Records – revolves around the concept of the contemporary romanza: a series of short pieces expressly inspired by the atmospheres, rhythms and visions of the nocturnal world. With this work, leader and composer Roberto De Nittis builds a natural bridge between three expressive worlds. On the one hand, there is the rigor of chamber music, reflected in the contrapuntal interplay between the instruments; on the other, the flexibility of jazz and its improvisational drive; and finally, the lyricism of the Italian singer–songwriter tradition, revealed in themes that are both lyrical and narrative. Each track functions as a snapshot of an atmosphere: from the refraction of moonlight to an ironic whisper, from the salt-laden air of the night to dreamlike reminiscences. All the pieces are composed by De Nittis, with the exception of L’Obelisco (Dario Cecchini) and Take Off (Federica Michisanti), both composed and performed by two prestigious guest musicians on the album, and Luna di Mezzogiorno (Bebo Ferra). The result is a wide–ranging work, rich in contrasts and chiaroscuro, open to cross-pollination and dialogue between different musical genres.
From the liner notes by Giovanni Sollima:
“Sextuor by Roberto De Nittis is a journey through different music levels, featuring a rich language that is varied and open to the world. It’s both lunar and physical, as well as ironic, intimate, and nostalgic… It’s music you can listen to in one breath, and immediately want to hear again and again.”
