A year and a half after releasing Maurizio Brunod’s second solo guitar album – originally released only on vinyl – digitally («Trip with the Ladies – Chapter 2»), we simply had to make his previous work available to fans as well, as this too was released only on limited–edition vinyl. In fact, this album started it all. Here, the Piedmontese guitarist’s own words come to our aid, as he is keen to point out: “Like all the best experiences, this album was never planned. It grew out of a chance—and fortunate—encounter with this six–string instrument, which overwhelmed my senses and inspired me to record my first solo acoustic guitar album. That is how «Trip with The Lady» came into being: an emotional journey of give and take with this unexpected six–string companion. I devoted great care to every aspect of the recording and mastering process… ”. Although Brunod explores a variety of musical paths, his journey achieves a remarkable formal unity. His sophisticated harmonization rooted in his command of the jazz tradition, together with his gift for melody — shaped also by influences other than jazz — are the album's defining characteristics. As a result, a popular standard such as My One and Only Love is revitalized through imaginative harmonization and the subtle reworking of its melodic outline, further enriched by the use of harmonics before dissolving into a brief Bach-inspired coda. The result is an enjoyable and accessible album that will appeal not only to acoustic guitar enthusiasts, but also to a much wider audience.
