Carla Marcotulli and Marcello Tonolo have had a magnificent idea: to celebrate the important connection between the French composer Michel Legrand and the American couple lyricists Alan and Marilyn Bergman. While the album also includes two notable exceptions —Faded Roses by Carol Connors, and Where's the Love, the English adaption by Bobby Weinstein of Sur les Quais de Cherbourg by Jacques Demy —the program is largely devoted to the Bergman’s extraordinary output, Their work —though widely celebrated by some of the most iconic artists of our time, still deserves broader recognition among general audience. The pianist and the singer approach the repertoire with love and respect, thanks to them we are able to understand their intimate essence, based on the fluid shifting of light and shadow of the melody, but also by the images evoked by the texts, undertake the exploration of these ten songs. The fusion between this music and these words creates emotions of robust maturity, adult songs for a contemporary world, revealed by the voice of Carla Marcotulli with profound emotional and timbric knowledge and underlined by the piano of Marcello Tonolo with exquisite harmonic and dynamic delicacy. Of him, we appreciate the respect for every compositional shade and the balance in the interaction with the words, of her, a transparency of diction (as if the text reveals itself right in front of us) that does not exclude a sensibility subtly independent perspective. Michel Legrand was a prolific composer, having written more than 200 film and television scores, in addition to many wonderful songs. «Legrand Romance» is an original and sincere tribute to his brilliant musical art.
