Four years after «Mali Music Has No Borders», recorded in a studio, and seven after «Mediterranean Blues», Baba Sissoko releases the third album with Mediterranean Blues for Caligola, who has become the name of his band. The much active Malian griot, by now Italian or better “Afro–Calabrese” as he loves to define himself, continues his successful effort to blend amadran – which can be considered the source of the blues – with African–American popular music. This new work, as the title suggests, is recorded live as the 2017 one. The Mediterranean Sea is an essential meeting place among different cultures and takes on a highly symbolic meaning; if today it is a place of death and conflict, it used to foster the meeting among different peoples and traditions. Most of the line–up, except for the rhythm section, has remained the same as on previous albums. In addition to the leader, the clarinet by Alessandro De Marino, the harmonica by Domenico Canale and the guitar by Angelo Napoli all emerge in «Live in Basel». This band can engage audiences like few others, and this recording from a concert at the Floss Festival in Basel proves it in the best way. You’ll listen to old and new songs here, but all seem to be able to bring the audience’s attention to the highest level, until it is sung under the wise and experienced guidance of the “high priest” Baba Sissoko.
