LIVE AT SAINT PETER’S CHURCH - Carol Sudhalter Quartet

Godetevi l'esperienza. Questo è jazz nella sua migliore espressione.

______________
You can say that sax player and flutist Carol Sudhalter is a pioneer of the jazz
scene in Queens, NY. She arrived in Astoria, when it was still rare to find such
a performer there. She eventually founded the Astoria Jazz Band and Astoria
Big Band, which have performed in venues both large and small throughout
the borough of Queens, as well as in Manhattan jazz clubs. The Astoria Jazz
Band was included in the Mary Lou Williams Festival at the Kennedy Center in
Washington, DC. Carol also leads her own quartet and has been a sideperson in the bands of other performers.
Furthermore, she spends about a month each year, gigging and teaching throughout Italy. She has also periodically performed in the U.K., Switzerland and Germany.
Carol Sudhalter’s sound is classic, in the tradition of the pre-bebop players: robust yet
lyrical on baritone and tenor, flowing yet powerful on flute.
She instills her personality when performing jazz standards and the Great American Songbook, and composes lovely originals, at times inspired by her young music students. Plus, Carol can really dig into a blues with loads of soul. With the release of this CD, she adds singing to her musical arsenal.
The CD was recorded during a live concert at St. Peter’s Church, the legendary jazz
church on Lexington Avenue in New York City. As you listen, you will hear examples of much of what I have described. For the first time on a recording, Carol plays only baritone and flute, not using the tenor as a third instrument. But no matter what she plays, the best way to experience her music is in live settings, when she is interacting
with a kicking band in front of an enthusiastic audience of listeners.
Enjoy the experience.
This is jazz as its very best.
