Matera encounters - Dino Plasmati & LJP Big band

Non c'e tempo da perdere!

Quando ascoltiamo le prime note del pianoforte, siamo gia praticamente trascinati dal flusso della musica, dal flusso delle sensazioni che provengono dai nove brani scelti da Dino Plasmati per l'incontro della LJP Big Band con un grande solista del jazz statunitense come Bobby Watson.

Un repertorio scelto con attenzione da Dino Plasmati - chitarrista, direttore e animatore dell'ensemble - secondo alcune precise linee guida: una musica frizzante, gioiosa, sempre in movimento, capace di esaltare lo spirito brillante della formazione; la tradizione del jazz rivista attraverso uno sguardo meno consueto e per mezzo di compositori e interpreti diversi dai soliti; ultima, non meno importante anche se evidente, la forza dell'ensemble largo, la spinta delle varie sezioni fiati e le dinamiche che solo la big band sa offrire. Queste sono le chiavi utilizzate da Plasmati per mostrare in maniera immediata e coerente lo spirito della LJP Big Band. Viene subito fuori il carattere guascone e divertito del gruppo, e il mood spumeggiante in cui viene coinvolto il pubblico, esaltato da un repertorio condotto sempre in maniera tirata e diretta.

Persino le ballad, alla fin fine, pur mantenendo un carattere piu morbido, non diventano mai sdolcinate e si animano di una verve piu nervosa. E, infine, per chi avesse ancora qualche dubbio, le venature funky di Admiral's horn e la scoppiettante rilettura di Soul Kitchen dei Doors, la spinta hard bop di Groovin' hard e il dialogo serrato tra le sezioni che apre Big Mama Case mettono del tutto in chiaro le intenzioni della formazione.

La presenza di Bobby Watson trova il suo contraltare nella scelta di lavorare con brani e autori che guardano alla tradizione ma appartengono, per la maggior parte, a generazioni successive rispetto ai nomi storici. Come nel caso del sassofonista, si tratta di musicisti che hanno scavato all'interno del percorso tracciato da chi li ha preceduti per trovare nuove possibilità espressive. E, stando "appollaiati sulle spalle dei giganti" per citare Isaac Newton, hanno dato risalto alle loro intuizioni personali e al loro gusto, hanno mostrato come il jazz potesse evolvere anche dal suo interno.

E Bobby Watson, sia con la sua militanza nei Jazz Messengers di Art Blakey sia con la sua carriera solista, ha seguito un filo analogo: dimensione prevalentemente acustica, aderenza coerente alla tradizione senza pero perdere l'occasione di rendere riconoscibile la sua voce e di proporre una visione moderna del linguaggio.

L'incontro tra il solista e la big band diventa il terreno perfetto per mettere in pratica tutto questo:

i dialoghi e le risposte tra le sezioni; la possibilita di giocare con gli arrangiamenti e di ampliare i brani oltre la "consueta" successione di temi e assolo; l'impatto delle dinamiche. Sono tutti elementi in grado di restituire e moltiplicare l'energia espressiva.

Dino Plasmati affianca da anni l'attività delle sue formazioni più ristrette alla direzione della LJP Big Band: il chitarrista ha sempre condotto questa sua "creatura" come un laboratorio di crescita e confronto, dove poter convogliare energie diverse e in grado di collaborare con nomi di altissimo profilo internazionale.

E, allora, non c'e tempo da perdere... il pianoforte ha aperto le danze, presto si alzeranno le sezioni per intonare il primo tema e i solisti si daranno da fare per lanciarsi negli assolo: siamo già dentro lo spirito del disco!

There’s no time to waste!

When you listen to the first notes coming from the piano, you immediately get caught in the flow of music and emotions coming from the nine tunes chosen by Dino Plasmati for a special encounter: his LJP Big Band with the great US jazz soloist Bobby Watson.

Guitarist, conductor and ensemble’s leader, Dino Plasmati chose the repertoire with care following some precise guidelines: a lively, joyful and constantly changing music able to lift the magnificent spirit of the band; a different approach to jazz tradition seen through uncommon/unique interpreters and composers; and last but not least, a superior strength coming from a larger ensemble, the impulse given by brass and wind sections and the dynamics that only a big band can perform/offer.

These are the distinctive features that clearly and consistently show the character of the LJP Big Band.

The amused and daring character of the band is soon revealed, together with the ability to captivate the audience with an effervescent mood amplified by a repertoire always performed in a dynamic and straightforward style. What’s more, even if the ballads keep a mellow sound, they never get schmaltzy but they are enlivened by an intense verve.

And finally, the funky nuances of Admiral's horn, the sparking reinterpretation of Soul Kitchen by the Doors, the hard-bop boost given by Groovin’ Hard and the close dialogue among sections in the intro of Big Mama Case remove all doubts and state the intentions of the band.

The presence of Mr Bobby Watson counterbalances the choice of working with tunes and authors/musicians who, although sticking to tradition, belong mainly to a newer generation when compared to big historical figures. As in the case of the saxophonist, we are dealing with musicians who breached the path marked by their predecessors in order to find new expressive possibilities. And, “standing on the shoulders of Giants”, to quote Isaac Newton, they emphasized their own personal intuitions and taste, thus proving that jazz music can evolve even from its inwards.

First as a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and afterwards as solo performer, Bobby Watson followed the same pattern: a predominant acoustic dimension, the coherent adherence to tradition without losing the opportunity to raise his distintive voice and suggest his own modern vision of the jazz language.

The combination of the soloist and the big band provides a fertile ground to put all that into place: dialogues and call-and-response among sections, the possibility to play with arrangements and to expand the tunes beyond the ‘usual’ sequence of theme and solos; the effect of dynamics. All these elements not only return but also multiply the expressive Energy that defines their character.

Dino Plasmati has been combining his activity as musician in smaller groups and his role as leader of the LJP Big Band for a long time now: the guitarist led his “creation” as a lab where growing and learning through constantly new challenges is the key and where different energies are channelled in order to be able to work with great International artists.

And so, there’s no time to waste...the piano has cued the music, soon the sections will rise up to play the first theme and soloists will get ready for their performances: we are already in the mood for music!
