Il punto di partenza è la chitarra: elettrica, acustica, carica o meno di effetti; alla guida del trio o spina dorsale del quartetto; solista o impegnata a sostenere le evoluzioni degli altri strumenti. E, di conseguenza, si muove la musica: moderna, mainstream, attenta alle varie evoluzioni stilistiche o semplicemente, si fa per dire, al servizio delle melodie.

Mauro De Federicis scorre la linea temporale delle tradizioni e della storia del jazz per mezzo di salti, anche netti, nelle varie direzioni. Atteggiamenti, dinamiche e atmosfere, di volta in volta diverse, sganciano il lavoro del chitarrista dal dover rincorrere un punto di riferimento esterno o estraneo alle necessità del brano. De Federicis punta alla passione, si concentra completamente sul feeling da riversare nella musica a tutto vantaggio della fluidità di temi e improvvisazioni, dell'intensità delle ballad e del tiro dei brani ritmicamente più sostenuti. Il dialogo con le eredità del jazz, la voglia di porre i propri passi nelle orme di chi ha reso immortale questa musica, si ritrova anche nelle evoluzioni di alcuni temi celebri verso una riscrittura, come accadeva nella migliore pratica dei boppers, per rendere così una personale visione delle possibilità e delle suggestioni contenute in quelle progressioni armoniche.

La versione acustica e in trio, dilatata e lievemente alterata, di Samba pa ti, una delle melodie più conosciute di Santana diventa un buon esempio per rivelare l'approccio seguito in Inside time: il tema resta riconoscibile e mantiene intatto il portato melodico, l'intervento del chitarrista affronta il brano da tutte le prospettive per manipolarlo. Un'operazione condotta nel corso di esecuzioni, prove, ripensamenti e riascolti che, passo dopo passo, aggiungono sempre nuove, piccole quanto sostanziali modifiche per giungere al risultato che ascoltiamo nel disco.

Se il contrabbasso di Gabriele Pesaresi è una presenza ormai consolidata nella carriera di De Federicis, Max Ionata e Fabio Colella sono sicuramente meno presenti nelle sue precedenti prove in concerto e su disco del chitarrista.

La ricerca di nuovi colori trova una sponda nelle esperienze e nel bagaglio ormai consolidato e riconosciuto presente nel suono di Ionata, Pesaresi e Colella.

La combinazione dei vari ingredienti offre una tavolozza ampia, utile per consentire alla scrittura e alla disposizione quello sviluppo vario e aperto di cui si accennava sopra.

Mauro De Federicis traccia in questo modo un panorama, visto attraverso le sei corde, delle sue esperienze e del suo modo di intendere il jazz. Inside time ci consegna un musicista maturo, capace di muoversi con personalità in territori stilistici differenti e, soprattutto, intenzionato a proseguire con curiosità l'esplorazione.

The starting point is the guitar, electric or acoustic and with or without electronic effects, leading a trio or as the backbone of the quartet, in a solo role or supporting the other instruments. As a result the music constantly moves ahead, whether it be modern, mainstream, attentive to stylistic developments or simply at the service of the melodies. Mauro De Federicis scrolls down the timeline of the traditions and the history of jazz with sudden and unexpected jumps in many different directions. But the points of reference of the guitarist’s constantly changing attitudes, dynamics and atmospheres are always closely connected to the inherent needs of the piece. De Federicis concentrates on recreating the original passion of jazz, and he focuses completely on the feeling that has to be invested in the music, for the benefit of the fluidity of the themes and improvisations, the emotional intensity of the ballads and the emphasis of the more rhythmically sustained tracks. The guitarist’s continual dialogue with the legacy of jazz and his desire to follow in the footsteps of those who have made this music immortal can also be detected in the development of some well-known themes, as in the best practice of be-bop, so as to create a very personal vision of the possibilities and suggestions hidden within those harmonic progressions. The acoustic version, dilated and slightly altered, of Samba Pa Ti, one of Santana’s best known tunes, is a good example of the overall approach manifested in Inside Time. In this trio the theme remains recognizable and retains its melodic drive intact, and the guitarist tackles the piece from every possible different direction in order to enhance and manoeuvre it. This operation was conducted during the performances, rehearsals, second listenings and retouchings that gradually added various modifications, both small and substantial, in order to achieve the result that we can hear on the compact disc.
Gabriele Pesaresi’s double-bass has a well-established role in the career of De Federicis, but Max Ionata on sax and Fabio Colella on drums have been less frequent collaborators in the earlier concerts and recordings of De Federicis. Their new contribution and the combination of all these musical ingredients now offers a broad palette that gives the pieces ample space for the open development and adaptation that is the hallmark of this record.
In this way Mauro De Federicis presents us with a panorama of his experiences and his understanding of jazz, expressed through the six strings of his guitar. Inside Time is a record by a mature musician who is able to move freely in many different stylistic territories while always maintaining his own personality and who is, above all, determined to continue this exploration with his unending inventiveness and curiosity.
