Press Release

Alberto Olivieri is a veteran of the Italian jazz scene and has accompanied a large number of musicians, including international artists. The drummer from Verona also features on many title of our catalogue, alongside Bruno Marini, Stefano Zeni or Boris Savoldelli, but above all on that historic album recorded in 1989 and released on CD in 2013, with a special band that included, to name but a few, Albert Mangelsdorff and Franco D’Andrea, Trilo Gurtu and Roberto Ottaviano, Ernst Reijseger and Paolo Damiani («Capriccio a Milano», Caligola 2166). Now, after countless recordings as a sideman, Olivieri has finally decided to put himself to the test as a bandleader, and he has done so alongside trusted musician friends such as Stefano Zeni on violin and Bruno Marini on Hammond organ. He does so with an original project, in which he has involved the poet and writer Eros Olivotto, who has gifted the trio with ten poems, which have served as inspiration for the musicians’ themes and improvisations. We are therefore not dealing with the classic poetry reading in which the poet recites his verses accompanied by music; here, poetry is merely a source of suggestion, as well as inspiration: the verses flow as fluidly and naturally as the trio’s music. It was therefore fitting that the ten poems, which inspired ten musical pieces, should find a place within the album’s booklet. It is difficult to find definitions for this music – free, sure, but anchored to a groove with solid and deep roots. Jazz fans will not be shocked if we mention the Grateful Dead or certain lengthy modal solos by John Coltrane, or if our thoughts turn to the ragas of Indian music or to the simple yet hypnotic cycle of the blues.
