Riccardo Zorzi, born in Vittorio Veneto (Treviso) in 1988, is a versatile and highly adaptable musician. He studied with Walter Calloni in Milan, who introduced him to pop and fusion, before completing his studies in classical percussion at the Vicenza Conservatory under the guidance of Saverio Tasca. At the same time, he attended the Jazz Department, where he studied drums with Mauro Beggio, while also pursuing composition and jazz piano. He has been leading this piano trio for several years now, as demonstrated by the remarkable interplay that characterizes every performance on «Songs for My Daughter», his debut album. Perhaps because it is led not by a pianist but by a drummer, the trio stands apart from the many similar groups active in Italy. This is evident in the wide dynamic range and strong expressive drive that characterize all six compositions by Riccardo Zorzi, which combine the energy of fusion with the expressive freedom of free jazz. As the leader writes in the liner notes: “…the album gathers six pieces written over the past four years — a kind of musical journal shaped by the quiet yet overwhelming emotion of my daughter’s birth. Each piece tells a bit of that special time and turns moments of tenderness, awe, and reflection into melody and atmosphere. I tried to honor both the fragility and the quiet strength of those days, leaving room for improvisation and for the music to unfold through the conversation between the instruments.” Marco Vavassori on double bass and Paolo Corsini on piano and synth are his invaluable musical companions. Through their touch, their sound, and their deep musical intuition, they have left an indelible mark on this music, enriching it with nuance, color, and breath. Their contribution goes beyond interpretation: it is a shared act of creation, in which ideas come alive and take shape in the moment. Having grown together over years of performing, the trio has developed an exceptional degree of cohesion, and the trust and rapport among its members resonate in every note.
