In the wake of the first release—documenting the standards performed by the duo of Mal Waldron and Sam Rivers at the concert held on 15 February 1984 at the Toniolo Theatre in Mestre, Venice—and following the response of listeners across the world, we return to that evening to reveal its final, luminous moment: the extended encore that brought it to a close. Breeze, one of Rivers’ defining compositions of the 1980s, was the only original piece heard that night. If the earlier set found him devoted entirely to the tenor sax, here his voice unfolds more widely, as he moves between soprano sax and flute—colors that were integral to his musical language in performance. The music opens into a freer, more spacious terrain, echoing the exploratory spirit that had already established Rivers as one of the essential voices of creative music in the previous decade. Long left unheard, this tune now completes the portrait of that night, first glimpsed in «Live in Mestre Venezia 1984».
