Jazz musicians usually record thei music in the studio and use the best digital technologies to perfect ad correct their tracks. Editing is a common practice that allows musicians to release a work when they are fully satisfied with it. However, some live records, for all their imperfections, can still convey those same emotions one can only feel at a great concert. It is no surprise that albums like Bill Evans at the Village Vanguard (1961) and Miles Davis at the Philarmonic Hall (1964) are considered milestones in the history of jazz. This recording captures a magical evening with a quartet that is full of energy and excels at playing familiar standards. All four musicians need no introduction, especially Dario Carnovale and Michele Polga, the latter considered for some years among the most talented and original tenor saxophonist of Italian jazz scene. Perhaps it is no coincidence that four of the eight chosen tunes were composed by three tenor saxophone masters such as Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson and Frank Foster. Michele Polga, Dario Carnovale, Pasquale Fiore and Lorenzo Conte - who pays tribute to a giant of the double bass and his inspirator as Paul Chambers - play with a great sense of balance, enviable interplay, and just the right amount of expressive fury. A real "big pulse", as the title properly says.
