Five characters (the musicians) embark on an imaginary journey through the lives, sensations, environments and stories of ten seemingly separate societies (the tracks). Along an endless, flowing path, ten planets reveal both fantastic and improbable – yet also possible and realistic – evolutions of "worlds", scattered across the infinite possibilities and probabilities of cosmic space. When reimagined as building blocks for a story, a journey or a life path, the barriers of distance, separation and difference melt away into fluid connections. «Liquid Walls» tells this evocative journey, and the ten songs seem as many episodes of a unique long suite. In this new work, Andrea Ferrari, who plays many instruments and loves the clarinet, especially the bass, expands the trio of «Essential Lines» (Dodicilune, 2019), in which he was joined by Alberto Zanini and Davide Bussoleni, into a quintet. You might have expected his brother Adalberto to be there too, because he also plays woodwind and reeds. Instead, Andrea chose a darker–toned instrument, like the bassoon, which Roger Rota plays with extraordinary skill. This gives his music new and surprising colours. Andrea has been working closely with his brother Adalberto Ferrari in a duo called NovoTono for almost twenty years. They have released five albums together, the most recent being «Intertwined Roots» (Parco della Musica 2023), which also features Gianluigi Trovesi. The leader's avant–garde jazz is open but well structured, influenced by his classical background, but it is never ethereal or abstract, and it doesn't fall into the traps of self–satisfied virtuosity, thanks to Zanini's visionary guitar – also admired for its skilful use of electronics – and to the solid bass–and–drum team of Loris Leo Lari and Davide Bussoleni. A journey, that proposed by Ferrari, which, if approached without preconceptions, will remain in your memory.
