Il nuovo album celebra il ventennale del gruppo e del suo sodalizio con Auand Records

Il gruppo “Synapser” compie 20 anni. Il primo CD “Beauty Is a Rare Thing” (Auand Records), atto di nascita del gruppo, è infatti dell’ottobre 2004, un bel po' di tempo fa. Un lungo cammino fatto di musica e amicizia che ne fa uno dei gruppi più longevi del jazz italiano. Un progetto che è stato sempre molto elogiato e che, fin da subito, ha portato a Tossani soddisfazioni e riconoscimenti, quale per esempio la designazione di “Miglior nuovo talento del jazz italiano” nel Top Jazz del 2006.

Quest’ultima uscita discografica del pianista è senza dubbio un lavoro complesso e, come sempre nella sua produzione, dalla forte impronta personale, forte di una tessitura caleidoscopica e al contempo di grande libertà sotto l’aspetto compositivo e interpretativo.

Al fianco di Giancarlo Tossani (pianoforte, synth, elettronica), a formare un quartetto dall’alchimia speciale che si distingue per feeling, interplay e dialogo musicale, sono tre grandi e consolidati musicisti, improvvisatori intelligenti ed espressivi quali Achille Succi (sax alto, clarinetto basso e contrabbasso, flauto pifano), Tito Mangialajo Rantzer (contrabbasso, voce) e Cristiano Calcagnile (batteria).

«Quando si realizza un brano – racconta Tossani – mi auspico che ogni musicista dia vita a un sotto-testo, a una molteplicità che confluisca in una tessitura comune a più dimensioni. Nelle mie precise intenzioni tutto è paritario, democraticamente senza il prevalere di solismi e solipsismi. A questo principio collettivo e comunicativo del resto allude proprio il nome del quartetto, Synapser, che potremmo tradurre un po’ come connettore di sinapsi ».

“Nightrumor”, pubblicato da Auand Records nella serie Weird, sarà disponibile in edizione limitata su CD e su tutte le piattaforme streaming a partire da venerdì 18 Ottobre. Il singolo “Roulette” sarà invece disponibile dal 27 Settembre.

«Parecchi dei titoli che ho scelto – spiega Tossani – sono palindromi, proprio per indicare la possibilità di una molteplicità di livelli. L’insieme spazia tra acustico ed elettronico, delinea un paesaggio sonoro variabile, a volte tinto di sfumature drammatiche ma pure divertito e ironico, composto da groove iterativi, ipnotici e lineari, ma anche di intrecci aggrovigliati. Un procedere multiforme, fragile e mai dato per scontato, quasi un’immagine musicale del nostro personale incespicare su questa terra».

«Devo inoltre – prosegue Tossani – rendere assolutamente un grande omaggio a Marco Valente e alla sua Auand, a cui si deve il merito di aver reso visibile il mio lavoro.

Dall’iniziale invio del demo di “Beauty Is a Rare Thing” è nata poi una lunga collaborazione. Fin dalle prime uscite discografiche, anch’esse risalenti a poco più di vent’anni fa, ho apprezzato Auand, la sua qualità e personalità, in cuor mio auspicando di fare parte del suo catalogo, cosa che poi è effettivamente successa!».

«Voglio poi – conclude Tossani – ringraziare Francesco Ponticelli, di Cicaleto Recording Studio, che oltre ad aver curato parte del mix ha contribuito in alcuni casi a elaborare il materiale che avevamo registrato».

The new album celebrates the band’s 20th anniversary and their partnership with Auand Records

Synapser is turning 20. The band’s debut album, “Beauty Is a Rare Thing” (Auand Records), was released quite some time ago, back in October 2004. A journey filled with music and friendship, that makes them one of the longest-standing acts in Italian jazz. Always welcomed with much praise, this project brought Tossani recognition and accolades early on, such as being named "Best New Talent in Italian Jazz" in the 2006 Top Jazz awards.

This latest release is undoubtedly a complex work, with a distinctive personal touch, as always in his productions, characterized by a kaleidoscopic texture and a great sense of freedom in both composition and interpretation.

Giancarlo Tossani (piano, synth, electronics) leads a quartet with a special chemistry that stands out for its musical interplay and dialogue. He shares it with three well-established, intelligent and expressive improvisers: Achille Succi (alto sax, bass clarinet, contrabass, pifano flute), Tito Mangialajo Rantzer (double bass, vocals), and Cristiano Calcagnile (drums).

«When working on new compositions – Tossani says, – I hope each musician brings to life an underlying subtext, a range of dimensions that contribute to a common texture. In my perspective, equality is key – there’s no room for egotism. This ethic of collectivism and communication is precisely what the quartet name, Synapser, refers to. It’s like a connector of synapses.»

Released by Auand Records as part of their Weird Series, Nightrumor will be available in a limited edition on CD and on all streaming platforms starting Friday, October 18th.

«Many of the titles I’ve picked – Tossani explains – are palindromes, symbolizing the possibility of multiple levels. Spanning from acoustic to electronic sounds, it creates a dynamic soundscape, at times darkened by dramatic undertones, at others playful and ironic. It’s made up of repetitive, hypnotic grooves as well as intricate, tangled textures. The overall approach is multifaceted, fragile, and never taken for granted, almost like a musical reflection of our personal stumbling through life.»

«I must also pay great tribute to Marco Valente and Auand, who deserve credit for making my work visible. From the initial demo submission of “Beauty Is a Rare Thing”, a long collaboration was born. Ever since their first releases, which also date back to over twenty years ago, I’ve admired Auand for its quality and personality, secretly hoping I’d be part of their catalog – which eventually came true! I also want to thank Francesco Ponticelli from Cicaleto Recording Studio, who not only helped mix some parts but also contributed to shaping the material we recorded.»
