Quattro brani originali e sei arrangiamenti piuttosto elaborati di autori brasiliani (Guinga, Jean Charnaux, Tom Jobim e Yamandu Costa) in un incontro tra musica brasiliana, jazz e musica classica moderna con un carattere quasi cameristico ed elementi vicini al mondo dei grandi compositori classici (Ravel, Mahler, Debussy, Schoenberg, Chopin).

Produced by Dodicilune, distributed in Italy and abroad by IRD and in the main online stores by BELIEVE DIGITAL, Tuesday 11 June sees the release of ‘Homenagem ao Brasil’ by Berlin-based guitarist, composer and teacher - of Bolognese adoption - Matthias Hopf with double bass player Andrea Lamacchia and featuring the famous clarinettist Gabriele Mirabassi. Four original pieces and six rather elaborate arrangements of Brazilian composers (Guinga, Jean Charnaux, Tom Jobim and Yamandu Costa) in an encounter between Brazilian music, jazz and modern classical music with an almost chamber-like character and elements close to the world of the great classical composers (Ravel, Mahler, Debussy, Schoenberg, Chopin).

 "L’incontro tra Europa e Africa in un continente terzo – forse sta in questo il nucleo del fascino che la musica brasiliana ha sempre avuto su di me e che mi ha portato a scrivere questo “Homenagem ao Brasil”, progetto inconsueto per un compositore di musica  classica contemporanea. L’essenza di questo incontro è in gran parte una storia di violenza e ingiustizia – gli africani deportati dagli europei come schiavi per sfruttare le terre rubate alla popolazione indigena del Sudamerica colonizzato. Ma la musica brasiliana è proprio una prova del fatto che anche dalle circostanze peggiori possano nascere espressioni artistiche di grande bellezza. Il suo fascino per me è dovuto alla strana combinazione di melodie e armonie europee dal sapore spesso malinconico con l’elemento ritmico vitale della musica africana, una apparente contraddizione. Il mio è un omaggio molto personale attraverso quattro brani interamente composti da me e sei  arrangiamenti piuttosto elaborati di autori brasiliani, in particolare di Guinga, Jean Charnaux, Tom Jobim e Yamandu Costa. Si tratta di un misto di musica brasiliana, jazz e musica classica moderna con un carattere quasi cameristico, con elementi del mio modo di comporre ma anche con piccoli omaggi ad autori a me cari – Ravel, Mahler, Debussy, Schoenberg, Chopin. “Canto esquecido” significa “canto dimenticato” ma anche “angolo dimenticato” ed è dedicato a Guinga, che ho avuto il piacere di conoscere a una masterclass. “Menino sonhador” (il ragazzo sognatore) è  interamente basato su un motivo pentatonico tipico del canticchiare dei bambini che pervade tutto il pezzo. “Samba de Orfeo” è un omaggio al nostro duo “Rua Orfeo” (chitarra e contrabbasso) e un’allusione alla strada di Bologna dove abitiamo tutti e due (Via Orfeo). “Valsa melancolica” nasce dalla mia venerazione per Maurice Ravel con un vago riferimento nell’introduzione al quinto movimento del “Quatuor pour la fin du temps” di Olivier Messiaen. Gli arrangiamenti  dei brani brasiliani sono sempre preceduti da introduzioni composte da me. Ho avuto la grande fortuna di essere accompagnato in questo progetto da due musicisti eccezionali come Andrea Lamacchia al contrabbasso e Gabriele Mirabassi al clarinetto. Un ringraziamento anche al mio amico e grande esperto di musica brasiliana Luca Lombardi a cui devo la conoscenza della maggior parte dei brani arrangiati."

"O encontro entre Europa e África em um terceiro continente - talvez aí esteja o cerne do fascínio que a música brasileira sempre teve para mim e que me levou a escrever esta "Homenagem ao Brasil", um projeto incomum para um compositor de música clássica contemporânea. A essência desse encontro é, em grande parte, uma história de violência e injustiça - africanos deportados pelos europeus como escravos para explorar terras roubadas da população indígena da América do Sul colonizada. Mas a música brasileira é justamente a prova de que, mesmo nas piores circunstâncias, podem nascer expressões artísticas de grande beleza. Seu fascínio para mim se deve à estranha combinação de melodias e harmonias europeias de sabor frequentemente melancólico com o elemento rítmico vital da música africana, uma aparente contradição. A minha é uma homenagem muito pessoal por meio de quatro peças compostas inteiramente por mim e seis arranjos bastante elaborados de compositores brasileiros, em especial Guinga, Jean Charnaux, Tom Jobim e Yamandu Costa. É uma mistura de música brasileira, jazz e música clássica moderna com um caráter quase camerístico, com elementos da minha própria maneira de compor, mas também com pequenas homenagens a autores que me são caros - Ravel, Mahler, Debussy, Schoenberg, Chopin. "Canto esquecido" é dedicado a Guinga, que tive o prazer de conhecer em uma masterclass. "Menino sonhador" é inteiramente baseada em um motivo pentatônico típico do cantarolar das crianças que permeia toda a peça. "Samba de Orfeo" é uma homenagem ao nosso duo "Rua Orfeo" (violão e contrabaixo) e uma alusão à rua em Bolonha onde ambos moramos (Via Orfeo). "Valsa melancólica" é fruto de minha veneração por Maurice Ravel, com uma vaga referência na introdução ao quinto movimento do "Quatuor pour la fin du temps" de Olivier Messiaen. Os arranjos das peças brasileiras são sempre precedidos por introduções compostas por mim. Tive a grande sorte de ser acompanhado nesse projeto por dois músicos excepcionais, Andrea Lamacchia no contrabaixo e Gabriele Mirabassi no clarinete. Meus agradecimentos também vão para meu amigo e grande especialista em música brasileira Luca Lombardi, che me apresentou a maioria das peças arranjadas."

"The encounter between Europe and Africa in another continent - perhaps I am enticed by this idea that led me to write this 'Homenagem ao Brasil', which in itself is an unusual project for a composer of contemporary classical music. The essence of this encounter is largely a history of violence and injustice - Africans deported by Europeans as slaves to exploit the lands stolen from the indigenous population of colonised South America. Yet Brazilian music is a living proof, that even despicable circumstances can lead to artistic expression of great beauty. For me its fascination is due to the strange combination of European melodies and harmonies which are often characterized by a melancholic flavour with the vital rhythmic element of African music in an apparent contradiction. This is a highly personal homage, with four pieces I composed myself and six rather elaborate arrangements of Brazilian composers, in particular Guinga, Jean Charnaux, Tom Jobim and Yamandu Costa. The result is a mixture of brazilian music, jazz and modern classical music with an almost chamber-like character. There are elements of my own compositional style along with small homages to composers dear to me - Ravel, Mahler, Debussy, Schoenberg, Chopin. "Canto esquecido" means "forgotten song" but also "forgotten corner" and is dedicated to Guinga, whom I had the pleasure of meeting at a masterclass. "Menino sonhador" (the dreamer boy) is entirely based on a pentatonic motif typical of children's humming that pervades the entire piece. "Samba de Orfeo" is a homage to our duo "Rua Orfeo" (guitar and double bass) and an allusion to the street in Bologna where we both live (Via Orfeo). "Valsa melancolica" stems from my veneration for Maurice Ravel with a vague reference to the introduction of the fifth movement of Olivier Messiaen's "Quatuor pour la fin du temps". The arrangements of the Brazilian pieces are always preceded by introductions that I have composed myself. I had the great fortune to be accompanied in this project by two exceptional musicians, Andrea Lamacchia on the double bass and Gabriele Mirabassi on the clarinet. My thanks also go to my friend and great Brazilian music expert Luca Lombardi to whom I owe the knowledge of most of the arranged pieces."

Born in Berlin, Matthias Hopf studied guitar and composition at the Conservatory Luigi Cherubini in Florence after working as an assistant director for musical theatre in Germany and Greece. He has written music for various chamber ensembles and for orchestra. His compositions have been performed in various contexts including the "Festival delle Nazioni" in Città di Castello and "Bologna 2000 Città Europea Della Cultura". His work "Da Dorotea a Raissa" on texts from Italo Calvino's "Invisible Cities" was broadcast by Rai Radio Tre. He has performed as a soloist and in the duo 'Rua Orfeo' with double bass player Andrea Lamacchia.
He teaches music in Bolzano and lives in Bologna.

Andrea Lamacchia is a double bass player, improviser and composer. His musical experiences touch the most diverse areas, from improvised music to symphonic music, from jazz to world music and popular music. For some years now, his artistic research has focused on the creative use of digital sound delay instruments to expand the timbral and expressive possibilities of the double bass. He holds a degree in DAMS from the University of Bologna; a degree in Double Bass from the "Santa Cecilia" Conservatory in Rome and a degree in Jazz Music from the "G.B.Martini" Conservatory in Bologna. He has played among others with Stefano Battaglia, Claudio Fasoli, Francesco Bearzatti, Emanuele Cisi, Daniele Sepe, Vinicio Capossela. He is a professor of Jazz Music at the Conservatories of Music.

Gabriele Mirabassi is an Italian clarinettist who moves with equal ease in both classical music and jazz. In recent years, he has been conducting in-depth research into popular instrumental music from Brazil and South American music in general. He also collaborates systematically with artists from a variety of fields, including theatre, dance and songwriting projects, etc. Over the years he has worked with numerous artists. In jazz, among many Richard Galliano, Enrico Rava, Enrico Pieranunzi, Marc Johnson, John Taylor, Steve Swallow, Stefano Battaglia, Roberto Gatto, Rabih Abu Khalil, Edmar Castaneda. In Brazil: Guinga, André Mehmari, Monica Salmaso, Sergio Assad, Trio  Madeira Brasil, Orquestra a Base de Sopro of Curitiba and many others. In classical music: John Cage, Mario Brunello, Andrea Lucchesini, Marco Rizzi, Gabriele Pieranunzi, Maurizio Baglini, Andrea Rebaudengo, Cristina Zavalloni, Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana, Istituzione Sinfonica Abruzzese, Italian String Orchestra, Banda Sinfonica do
