Martedì 16 gennaio esce People del progetto Roberto Ottaviano Eternal Love. Nel cd, registrato durante vari live tra Italia, Svezia, Slovenia, Svizzera e Finlandia, prodotto da Maurizio Bizzochetti per Dodicilune, con il contributo di NuovoImaie, distribuito in Italia e all’estero da Ird e nei principali store online da Believe, il sassofonista barese è affiancato da Marco Colonna (clarinetto basso), Alexander Hawkins (piano), Giovanni Maier (contrabbasso) e Zeno De Rossi (batteria). Con questo progetto discografico prosegue la collaborazione tra l'etichetta discografica pugliese e il musicista attivo sulla scena jazzistica internazionale da oltre quarant’anni. Dopo "Un Dio Clandestino" (2008), "Arcthetics. Soffio Primitivo" (2013), "Forgotten Matches. The Worlds of Steve Lacy" (2014), "Astrolabio" (2015), "Eternal Love" (2018), i due dischi dell’anno per Top Jazz di Musica Jazz, "Sideralis" (2017) e "Resonance & Rhapsodies" (2020), “Charlie’s Blue Skylight” (2022) e i recenti “A che punto è la notte” con il progetto Pinturas (2023) e “Astrolabio mistico” con Michel Godard (2023), arriva dunque People: cinque composizioni originali (Mong's Speakin', Hariprasad, Callas, Niki e Ohnedaruth) e i brani At The Wheel Well di Nikos Kypourgos, Gare Guillemans di Misha Mengelberg e Caminho Das Águas di Rodrigo Manhero.

«Molti hanno pensato che la mia idea di Eternal Love sia una sorta di ode all’amore in senso assoluto ed al senso di pace e non violenza, oltre che riconoscenza eterna verso qualcuno e qualcosa. Non è proprio così. Almeno, non solo», racconta Roberto Ottaviano. «Nella vita ci sono cose ineluttabili che incontriamo e che ci costringono ad agire, non solo ad osservare. Rispettare sé stessi, battersi, cercare, ascoltare, disinnescare ma anche denunciare. Ed ecco che bisogna sempre intendersi sulla parola amore, che può anche voler dire non porgere sempre l’altra guancia. L’umanità è un microcosmo nel cosmo ed agisce in modo inaspettato così come prevedibile, con dei voli pindarici di bellezza e continui tuffi negli abissi più orribili, rinnegando sé stessa e quindi trasformandosi in qualcosa di disumano», prosegue il musicista. «Ho voluto raccogliere qui una serie di momenti “live” della band che mi sembra il momento in cui noi tutti diamo il meglio nella combustione che si crea con il pubblico, e chiamarla People proprio nel tentativo di disegnare dei ritratti di questa umanità fatta di persone incontrate realmente e virtualmente, persone che ci hanno dato qualcosa, i loro luoghi ed i loro respiri».

Il cd si apre con At The Wheel Well una composizione di Nikos Kypourgos tratta dal film "The Cistern" di Hristos Dimas che racconta una storia carica di risonanza politica. In superficie il film è un ritratto dell'ultima estate dell'infanzia di un gruppo di ragazzi di undici anni che scherzano, sfidandosi a vicenda a tuffarsi in una cisterna d'acqua di cemento, giocando a calcio e altri passatempi simili. Lo sfondo non dichiarato dell'intero film è il periodo del governo militare in Grecia (1967-74), un periodo in cui il paese entrò in una sorta di strana stasi sociale. Mong's Speakin' è una dedica allo spirito giocoso di un grande indimenticato della musica sud-africana: il trombettista Mongezi Fesa. Hariprasad è un gioco di specchi riflettenti e quasi ipnotici come caratteristica della musica popolare indiana. Solo che il gruppo non si affida alle regole del Raga, bensì alle proprie capacità improvvisative. È dedicato al grande solista di flauto Hariprasad Chaurasia. Callas è un ritratto della diva intriso di mistero, sofferenza ed elevazione. Niki è una metafora della velocità, dedicato a Niki Lauda. Gare Guillemans di Misha Mengelberg è ispirato ad una vecchia (ora rinnovata) stazione ferroviaria Belga. «Qui abbiamo conservato in parte la vena originale un po' New Orleans funeral, ma secondo gli stilemi dei Dutch Masters, con il mio canto da vecchio ubriacone, e con l'idea che forse a Misha, questo personaggio, sarebbe piaciuto», precisa Ottaviano. Ohnedaruth è il nome sanscrito adottato da Coltrane e significa "compassionevole". «Mi piace pensare che qui abbiamo guardato a Trane attraverso lo spirito del quartetto di Elton Dean con Keith Tippett, Harry Miller e Louis Moholo, la loro forza la loro energia che non mi abbandonerà mai», racconta. Caminho Das Águas è un brano del brasiliano Rodrigo Manhero, ma in fondo il Cammino delle Acque è un leit motif della musica brasiliana, soprattutto quella legata allo spirito dell'Amazzonia. «Potrebbe sembrare strano che un gruppo come questo, inserisce un brano così dolce e danzante nel suo repertorio, tuttavia io credo fermamente nel fatto che bisogna suonare quel che c'è nel cuore, senza farsi condizionare da luoghi comuni».

Attivo sulla scena jazzistica internazionale da oltre quarant’anni, Roberto Ottaviano ha suonato e inciso con alcuni tra i più importanti musicisti americani ed europei a cavallo tra diverse generazioni. A cinque anni prende lezioni di clarinetto al Conservatorio “Niccolò Piccinni” di Bari poi studia sassofono classico a Perugia con Federico Mondelci, armonia e composizione classica con Walter Boncompagni, Giacomo Manzoni e Luigi Nono. Un fortuito incontro con Steve Lacy lo spinge ad approfondire lo studio del sax soprano. In America studia composizione jazz e arrangiamento con Ran Blake, Bill Russo, George Russell collaborando con Buck Clayton, Ernie Wilkins, Benny Bailey, Sal Nistico; poi è membro dell'orchestra di Andrea Centazzo, collabora con Gianluigi Trovesi, Theo Jörgensmann, Franz Koglmann, Carlo Actis Dato, Radu Malfatti, Carlos Zingaro, Franz Koglmann, Georg Gräwe, Ran Blake, Tiziana Ghiglioni. Nel 1983 pubblica il suo primo album ("Aspects") con Giancarlo Schiaffini, Paolo Fresu, Carlo Actis Dato. Nel 1986 costituisce un quartetto con Arrigo Cappellatti. Nel 1988 fonda l'ensemble di ottoni "Six Mobilies", nel 1988 incide un omaggio a Charles Mingus (Mingus - portraits in six colours ), nel 1990 incide "Items from the old earth". Dal 1979 collabora con numerosi musicisti jazz come Dizzy Gillespie, Art Farmer, Mal Waldron, Albert Mangelsdorff, Chet Baker, Enrico Rava, Barre Phillips, Keith Tippett, Steve Swallow, Irene Schweizer, Kenny Wheeler, Henry Texier, Paul Bley, Aldo Romano, Myra Sant'agnello, Tony Oxley, Misha Mengelberg, Han Bennink, Mario Schiano, Trilok Gurtu, Samulnori, Pierre Favre. Suona in moltissimi jazz festival europei e americani. Si esibisce in Germania, Austria, Svizzera, Belgio, Francia, Danimarca, Norvegia, Inghilterra, Spagna, Portogallo, Jugoslavia, Albania, Romania, Russia, India, Giappone, Messico, Tailandia, Marocco, Algeria, Costa d’Avorio, Senegal, Cameroun, Stati Uniti, Canada, ed ha inciso per Red, Splasc(h), Soul Note, Dodicilune, Hat Art, Intakt, ECM, DIW ed Ogun. Da didatta ha tenuto corsi a Woodstock N.Y., nei conservatori di Città del Messico, Vienna, Groningen, presso le istituzioni culturali di Urbino, Cagliari, Firenze, Roma, Siracusa. Ha fondato il corso Musica Jazz nel Conservatorio Niccolò Piccinni di Bari e di cui è coordinatore da quasi 30 anni. È autore del libro, "Il sax: lo strumento, la storia, le tecniche” (Muzzio editore, 1989). Per Dodicilune ha pubblicato, con varie formazioni, "Un Dio Clandestino" (2008), "Arcthetics. Soffio Primitivo" (2013), "Forgotten Matches. The Worlds of Steve Lacy" (2014), "Astrolabio" (2015), "Eternal Love" (2018), i due dischi dell’anno per Top Jazz (referendum indetto dalla rivista Musica Jazz) "Sideralis" (2017) e "Resonance & Rhapsodies" (2020), “Charlie’s Blue Skylight” (2022) e  “A che punto è la notte” (2023). È stato eletto musicista italiano dell'anno per Top Jazz 2022, referendum annuale indetto dalla storica rivista Musica Jazz.

UN BELLISSIMO ED EMOZIONANTE AFFRESCO SONORO
RICCO DI MEMORIE, SUGGESTIONI E SOGNI

Scrivere le note di copertina di un disco non è mai una cosa semplice. Il rischio di essere banali e scontati oppure contorti e prolissi è sempre in agguato. Quando poi questo compito si riferisce a un disco di un caro amico da oltre 40 anni con cui hai condiviso passioni (il jazz inglese ed europeo in primis), avventure, gioie, dolori, amicizie, viaggi, chiacchierate allora la sfida diventa entusiasmante oltre ad  avere una buona dose di “rischio”. E allora avviso subito chi sta per iniziare l’ascolto di “People” che si tratta di un disco meraviglioso che sancisce la piena maturità espressiva di questo splendido gruppo con questo nome così evocativo, Eternal Love. Una band allestita con la solita  sensibilità da un “enologo” di grande talento come è sempre stato Roberto Ottaviano. Nel corso della sua lunga carriera ha sempre prodotto “vini eccellenti”, gruppi o progetti mai scontati e banali. E questo disco lo consacra come uno dei più originali e talentuosi band leader che il jazz europeo e italiano abbiano annoverato negli ultimi decenni. Un gran bel “vino”, un Eternal Wine di spessore paragonabile a uno dei migliori “Barolo”. Può essere un’idea abbinare un bicchiere di Barolo che vi accompagni nell’ascolto di “People” in questo multiforme viaggio sonoro del quintetto… ma fate voi… “People” è un disco sontuoso, ricco di aromi e di profumi, di viaggi e incontri, di memorie passate e affreschi contemporanei. Ma soprattutto si sente l’anima, il cuore e la gioia di questi 5 musicisti e amici che suonano da anni insieme. I vini prodotti dalla “cantina Ottaviano” sono sempre stati negli anni sorprendenti… come non ricordare ad esempio i Six Mobiles, un sestetto degli anni Ottanta di soli fiati che omaggiava Mingus, o il suo indimenticabile tributo al suo mentore Steve Lacy “Forgotten Matches”, o il recente bellissimo “A che punto è la notte” con il gruppo Pinturas. Chiunque può addentrarsi nella discografia di Roberto Ottaviano con la consapevolezza di scoprire gioiellini magari finiti nell’oblio ma che come i buoni vini non invecchiano mai. Negli ultimi anni, grazie al supporto dell’etichetta pugliese Dodicilune, la sua produzione discografica ha avuto un’accelerazione e ogni disco progettato e sempre stato in grado  di sorprendere e regalare autentiche affascinanti avventure musicali. Roberto è sempre stato un artista curioso, onnivoro, instancabile e aperto che lo ha portato a collaborare con i musicisti più svariati e variegati. Da Giorgio Gaslini a Keith Tippett, da Mal Waldron ad Albert Mangelsdorff, da Pierre Favre a Louis Moholo, da Franz Koglmann ad Andrea Centazzo, da Michel Godard ai Nexus, da Gianluigi Trovesi a Tiziana Ghiglioni, Bennink, Oxley, Trilok Gurtu… e la lista delle sue collaborazioni è lunghissima. Il suono del suo soprano è sempre brillante, onirico ed emozionante. Il repertorio scelto in questo disco alterna brani originali, tra cui spiccano il gioioso omaggio a Mongesi Feza “Mong’s Speakin’”, e la splendida “Gare Guillemans” di Misha Mengelberg dall’andamento dinoccolato (con Ottaviano per la prima volta nelle vesti di “crooner” dissacrante e strampalato) e composizioni di vari autori (la splendida solennità del brano di apertura “At the wheel well” di Nikos Kypourgos e la suadente  e bellissima solennità di “Caminho Das Aguas” di Rodrigo Manhero in chiusura del disco). Nel suo gruppo Eternal Love, creato ormai 6 anni fa, Ottaviano ha voluto accanto a sé musicisti che avessero le caratteristiche a lui più affini. Marco, Alexander, Giovanni e Zeno sono riusciti a creare sotto l’egida dell’”enologo Roberto” quella magia di gruppo che pervade ogni loro concerto e disco. Grandissime doti comunicative e di ascolto, intesa umana e musicale profonda, voglia di stupire e stupirsi ogni volta. Infatti ogni concerto è diverso e sorprendente. I 5  musicisti si accomunano nel  coraggio di ricercare nuovi sapori e nuove strade mantenendo salde le radici con la loro storia e le loro passioni. Una frontline così particolare come quella voluta da Roberto con il suo sax soprano affiancato al clarinetto basso si è dimostrata non solo originale ma perfettamente adeguata per esprimere al meglio l’universo musicale di Eternal Love. Sono rarissimi, nella storia del jazz gruppi che abbinavo con tale originalità e freschezza sonora due strumenti così particolari.Individualmente ogni membro di Eternal Love ha avuto negli anni il suo percorso individuale molto ben definito e ampio. Ormai Alexander Hawkins è un musicista internazionalmente acclamato non solo per il suo talento pianistico e compositivo ma per la sua irrefrenabile voglia di immergersi in nuove esperienze e mondi sonori. Chi può dire di aver suonato e inciso con Anthony Braxton e Louis Moholo, con Marshall Allen ed Evan Parker, con Shabaka Hutchings e Joe McPhee, con Wadada Leo Smith e Mulatu Astakè? La sua discografia e la sua attività concertistica ne sono ampia testimonianza. Ascoltatatelo in “Gare Guillemans” e “Niki”! Marco Colonna è forse il meno conosciuto del gruppo ma negli ultimi anni è emerso prepotentemente sulla scena italiana ed internazionale come uno dei clarinettisti  più innovativi e originali. Non solo dotato di una tecnica suntuosa con cui padroneggia il clarinetto basso, ma una fervida capacità di regalare squarci solistici sempre connessi alla trama del brano. Con convinta sincerità considero Marco uno dei clarinettisti più originali e incisivi attivi oggi sulla scena europea. Sentitelo in questo disco (soprattutto nell’introduzione Dolphyana di “Niki” e nell’infuocato solo di “Ohnedaruth”) e ne sarete rapiti. Una voce strumentale inconfondibile e bellissima emersa in Italia negli ultimi anni… bravo Marco! Zeno De Rossi ha nelle mani e nel cuore un drumming così elastico, fantasioso e mai invadente che lo ha portato a essere un batterista indispensabile in moltissime avventure del jazz italiano degli ultimi vent’anni. Dalle splendide sonorità di Guano Padano e Zenophilia, ai sodalizi con Vinicio Capossela, Franco D’Andrea, Francesco Bearzatti “Tinissima” la sua batteria è sempre un perno fondamentale grazie alla sua capacità di ascoltare e interagire con discrezione e incisività. Zeno affonda a piene mani  il suo drumming nella storia del jazz per risintonizzarlo e proiettarlo nelle sonorità del jazz contemporaneo.  E infine Giovanni Maier, bassista solido, di grande orecchio e duttilità che nella sua vasta carriera musicale ha voluto ampliare il suo modo di vivere il jazz contemporaneo con mille sfaccettature… docente al Conservatorio di Trieste, promotore di mille attività nel suo amato Friuli, produttore di una piccola ma brillantissima etichetta discografica (Palomar) in cui ha realizzato e documentato moltissime esperienze e sogni musicali in solo, in duo, con alcuni suoi allievi e in formazioni ampie in cui le sue talentuose (ma ahimè mai troppo valorizzate) qualità di compositore e arrangiatore hanno finalmente visto la luce. Sono trascorsi 5 anni dalla pubblicazione dell’album di esordio del gruppo e “People” traccia l’evoluzione, la maturazione, l’amalgama che il gruppo ha raggiunto dopo tantissimi concerti e successi raccolti in tutta Europa. E non è un caso che questo disco raccolga esclusivamente brani incisi dal vivo in vari festival dove la partecipazione sempre entusiastica del pubblico ha favorito il fantastico interplay, la coesione, la voglia di darsi al pubblico di questo splendido quintetto, favorito da un repertorio ogni volta diverso. Ho avuto la fortuna di assistere a due stupendi concerti dal vivo, al Festival Jazz di Novara e al Torino Jazz Festival. Il feeling che il gruppo sviluppa con il pubblico è qualcosa di magico e questo arricchisce a dismisura le emozioni che il gruppo regala. Le espressioni visive dei musicisti (sguardi, sorrisi, movimenti, ammiccamenti…) durante i concerti sono la testimonianza di quanto questo gruppo assorba le vibrazioni, la magia dell’ascolto e del piacere dell’ascolto  che proviene dalla platea. E le sue brillanti performance in vari festival europei (in parte documentati in questo disco) né sono una brillante conferma. Lunga vita a Eternal Love! Grazie Zeno, Alexander Giovanni, Marco e grazie soprattutto a Roberto per aver creato questo splendido gruppo! Eternal concerts, Eternal festivals, Eternal records, Eternal Barolo, Eternal Love!

Tuesday 16 January sees the release of People by Roberto Ottaviano's project Eternal Love. On the CD, recorded during various live performances in Italy, Sweden, Slovenia, Switzerland and Finland, produced by Maurizio Bizzochetti for Dodicilune, with the contribution of NuovoImaie, distributed in Italy and abroad by Ird and in the main online stores by Believe, the Bari saxophonist is joined by Marco Colonna (bass clarinet), Alexander Hawkins (piano), Giovanni Maier (double bass) and Zeno De Rossi (drums). With this recording project, the collaboration between the Apulian record label and the musician who has been active on the international jazz scene for over forty years continues. After "Un Dio Clandestino" (2008), "Arcthetics. Primitive Breath" (2013), "Forgotten Matches. The Worlds of Steve Lacy" (2014), "Astrolabe" (2015), "Eternal Love" (2018), the two records of the year for Musica Jazz's Top Jazz, "Sideralis" (2017) and "Resonance & Rhapsodies" (2020), "Charlie's Blue Skylight" (2022) and the recent "At What Point is the Night" with the Pinturas project (2023) and "Mystic Astrolabe" with Michel Godard (2023), comes therefore People: five original compositions (Mong's Speakin', Hariprasad, Callas, Niki and Ohnedaruth) and the songs At The Wheel Well by Nikos Kypourgos, Gare Guillemans by Misha Mengelberg and Caminho Das Águas by Rodrigo Manhero.

"Many have thought that my idea of Eternal Love is a kind of ode to love in the absolute sense and a sense of peace and non-violence, as well as eternal gratitude to someone and something. It's not really like that. At least, not only,' says Roberto Ottaviano. 'In life there are inescapable things we encounter that force us to act, not just observe. To respect oneself, to fight, to search, to listen, to defuse but also to denounce. And we must always understand the word love, which can also mean not always turning the other cheek. Humanity is a microcosm in the cosmos and acts in unexpected as well as predictable ways, with Pindaric flights of beauty and continuous plunges into the most horrible abysses, denying itself and thus turning into something inhuman," the musician continues. "I wanted to collect here a series of 'live' moments of the band, which I feel is when we all give our best in the combustion that is created with the public, and call it People precisely in an attempt to draw portraits of this humanity made up of people we have really and virtually met, people who have given us something, their places and their breaths".

The CD opens with At The Wheel Well, a composition by Nikos Kypourgos from the film 'The Cistern' by Hristos Dimas, which tells a story charged with political resonance. On the surface, the film is a portrait of the last summer of childhood of a group of eleven-year-old boys who joke around, challenging each other to dive into a concrete water cistern, playing football and other similar pastimes. The unspoken background of the entire film is the period of military rule in Greece (1967-74), a time when the country entered a kind of strange social stasis. Mong's Speakin' is a dedication to the playful spirit of an unforgettable great of South African music: trumpeter Mongezi Fesa. Hariprasad is a game of reflective, almost hypnotic mirrors as characteristic of Indian folk music. Only the group does not rely on Raga's rules, but on their own improvisational skills. It is dedicated to the great flute soloist Hariprasad Chaurasia. Callas is a portrait of the diva imbued with mystery, suffering and elevation. Niki is a metaphor for speed, dedicated to Niki Lauda. Gare Guillemans by Misha Mengelberg is inspired by an old (now renovated) Belgian railway station. 'Here we have partly kept the original vein a bit New Orleans funeral, but in the style of the Dutch Masters, with my singing as an old drunkard, and with the idea that maybe Misha, this character, would have liked it,' Ottaviano points out. Ohnedaruth is the Sanskrit name adopted by Coltrane and means 'compassionate'. "I like to think that here we looked at Trane through the spirit of Elton Dean's quartet with Keith Tippett, Harry Miller and Louis Moholo, their strength their energy that will never leave me," he says. Caminho Das Águas is a song by Brazilian Rodrigo Manhero, but after all, the Way of the Waters is a leitmotif of Brazilian music, especially that linked to the spirit of the Amazon. "It might seem strange that a group such as this would include such a sweet and dancing piece in its repertoire, but I am a firm believer in playing what is in your heart, without being conditioned by clichés".

Active on the international jazz scene for over forty years, Roberto Ottaviano has played and recorded with some of the most important American and European musicians straddling several generations. At the age of five, he took clarinet lessons at the Conservatorio 'Niccolò Piccinni' in Bari, then studied classical saxophone in Perugia with Federico Mondelci, harmony and classical composition with Walter Boncompagni, Giacomo Manzoni and Luigi Nono. A chance meeting with Steve Lacy prompted him to deepen his study of the soprano saxophone. In America he studied jazz composition and arrangement with Ran Blake, Bill Russo, George Russell, collaborating with Buck Clayton, Ernie Wilkins, Benny Bailey, Sal Nistico; then he was a member of Andrea Centazzo's orchestra, collaborating with Gianluigi Trovesi, Theo Jörgensmann, Franz Koglmann, Carlo Actis Dato, Radu Malfatti, Carlos Zingaro, Franz Koglmann, Georg Gräwe, Ran Blake, Tiziana Ghiglioni. He founded the Musica Jazz course at the Conservatorio Niccolò Piccinni in Bari and has been its coordinator for almost 30 years. He is the author of the book, 'Il sax: lo strumento, la storia, le tecniche' (Muzzio editore, 1989). For Dodicilune he has published, with various ensembles, 'Un Dio Clandestino' (2008), 'Arcthetics. Soffio Primitivo" (2013), "Forgotten Matches. The Worlds of Steve Lacy" (2014), "Astrolabio" (2015), "Eternal Love" (2018), the two records of the year for Top Jazz (referendum held by Musica Jazz magazine) "Sideralis" (2017) and "Resonance & Rhapsodies" (2020), "Charlie's Blue Skylight" (2022) and "A che punto è la notte" (2023). He was elected Italian musician of the year for Top Jazz 2022, an annual referendum held by the historic magazine Musica Jazz.

The Apulian label Dodicilune has been active since 1996 and has a catalogue of almost 350 record productions (CDs, vinyls, DVDs) by Italian and foreign artists. Thanks to Ird and Believe, the discs are distributed in Italy and abroad in the best music shops, in the main chains (Feltrinelli, Fnac, Ricordi, Mondadori, Melbookstore) and on 60 digital download/streaming platforms in about 80 countries worldwide (iTunes, Spotify, Deezer, AppleMusic, Amazon, Qobuz, Tidal).

Writing liner notes for an album is never a simple matter. The risk of being banal and obvious or convoluted and prolix is always lying in wait. Then, when this task refers to a record by a dear friend for over 40 years with whom you have shared passions (English and European jazz above all), adventures, joys, sorrows, friendships, travels, chats, then the challenge becomes exciting as well as having a good dose of 'risk'. And so I immediately warn those about to start listening to 'People' that this is a marvellous record that sanctions the full expressive maturity of this splendid band with this evocative name, Eternal Love. A band set up with the usual sensitivity by a very talented 'enologist' as Roberto Ottaviano has always been. Throughout his long career, he has always produced 'excellent wines', bands or projects that are never predictable or banal. And this disc consecrates him as one of the most original and talented band leaders that European and Italian jazz have counted in recent decades. A great 'wine', an Eternal Wine of comparable thickness to one of the best 'Barolo'. It might be an idea to pair a glass of Barolo to accompany you in listening to 'People' in this multifaceted sonic journey of the quintet... but you do it... 'People' is a sumptuous record, full of aromas and perfumes, of journeys and encounters, of past memories and contemporary frescoes. But above all, you can hear the soul, heart and joy of these five musicians and friends who have been playing together for years. The wines produced by the 'Ottaviano cellar' have always been surprising over the years... how can we not remember, for example, the Six Mobiles, a sextet from the 1980s that paid homage to Mingus, or his unforgettable tribute to his mentor Steve Lacy 'Forgotten Matches', or the recent beautiful 'A che punto è la notte' with the group Pinturas. Anyone can delve into Roberto Ottaviano's discography with the knowledge that they will discover gems that may have gone into oblivion but, like good wines, never age. In the last few years, thanks to the support of the Apulian label Dodicilune, his record production has accelerated and each record designed has always been able to surprise and provide genuine fascinating musical adventures. Roberto has always been a curious, omnivorous, tireless and open artist, which has led him to collaborate with the most diverse and varied musicians. From Giorgio Gaslini to Keith Tippett, from Mal Waldron to Albert Mangelsdorff, from Pierre Favre to Louis Moholo, from Franz Koglmann to Andrea Centazzo, from Michel Godard to Nexus, from Gianluigi Trovesi to Tiziana Ghiglioni, Bennink, Oxley, Trilok Gurtu... and the list of his collaborations is very long. The sound of her soprano is always brilliant, dreamlike and exciting. The repertoire chosen on this disc alternates between original pieces, including the joyous homage to Mongesi Feza 'Mong's Speakin' and Misha Mengelberg's splendid 'Gare Guillemans' (with Ottaviano for the first time in the guise of an irreverent and wacky 'crooner') and compositions by various composers (the splendid solemnity of the opening track 'At the wheel well' by Nikos Kypourgos and the persuasive and beautiful solemnity of 'Caminho Das Aguas' by Rodrigo Manhero at the close of the disc). In his group Eternal Love, created six years ago now, Ottaviano wanted musicians who had the characteristics most akin to his own. Marco, Alexander, Giovanni and Zeno have succeeded in creating, under the aegis of 'enologist Roberto', that group magic that pervades their every concert and record. Great communication and listening skills, deep human and musical understanding, a desire to amaze and surprise each time. In fact, every concert is different and surprising. The 5 musicians share the courage to seek out new flavours and new paths while keeping firmly rooted in their history and passions. Such an unusual frontline as that desired by Roberto with his soprano sax flanked by bass clarinet proved not only original but perfectly suited to best express the musical universe of Eternal Love. There are very few groups in the history of jazz that combine two such distinctive instruments with such originality and sonic freshness.Individually, each member of Eternal Love has had his or her own very well-defined and broad individual path over the years. By now, Alexander Hawkins is an internationally acclaimed musician not only for his pianistic and compositional talent but for his irrepressible desire to immerse himself in new experiences and sound worlds. Who can say that he has played and recorded with Anthony Braxton and Louis Moholo, with Marshall Allen and Evan Parker, with Shabaka Hutchings and Joe McPhee, with Wadada Leo Smith and Mulatu Astakè? His discography and concert activity are ample evidence of this. Listen to him in 'Gare Guillemans' and 'Niki'! Marco Colonna is perhaps the least known of the group, but in recent years he has emerged strongly on the Italian and international scene as one of the most innovative and original clarinettists. Not only is he endowed with a sumptuous technique with which he masters the bass clarinet, but he also has a fervent ability to offer soloistic glimpses that are always connected to the plot of the piece. With convinced sincerity, I consider Marco one of the most original and incisive clarinetists active on the European scene today. Listen to him on this disc (especially in the Dolphyana introduction of 'Niki' and in the fiery solo of 'Ohnedaruth') and you will be ravished. An unmistakable and beautiful instrumental voice that has emerged in Italy in recent years... bravo Marco! Zeno De Rossi has such elastic, imaginative and never intrusive drumming in his hands and heart that has made him an indispensable drummer in many Italian jazz adventures of the last twenty years. From the splendid sounds of Guano Padano and Zenophilia, to partnerships with Vinicio Capossela, Franco D'Andrea, Francesco Bearzatti "Tinissima" his drumming is always a fundamental pivot thanks to his ability to listen and interact with discretion and incisiveness. Zeno sinks his drumming deep into the history of jazz to re-tune it and project it into the sounds of contemporary jazz.  And finally, Giovanni Maier, a solid bass player with a great ear and ductility who in his vast musical career has sought to expand his way of experiencing contemporary jazz with a thousand facets a teacher at the Conservatory of Trieste, promoter of a thousand activities in his beloved Friuli, producer of a small but brilliant record label (Palomar) in which he has realised and documented many musical experiences and dreams in solo, duo, with some of his pupils and in large ensembles in which his talented (but alas never too highly valued) qualities as composer and arranger have finally seen the light of day. Five years have passed since the publication of the group's debut album, and 'People' traces the evolution, the maturation, the amalgam that the group has achieved after so many concerts and successes collected throughout Europe. And it is no coincidence that this disc exclusively collects tracks recorded live at various festivals where the always enthusiastic participation of the public has favoured the fantastic interplay, cohesion, and desire to give themselves to the public of this splendid quintet, favoured by a repertoire that is different every time. I was lucky enough to attend two wonderful live concerts, at the Novara Jazz Festival and at the Turin Jazz Festival. The feeling that the group develops with the audience is something magical, and this greatly enriches the emotions that the group offers. The musicians' visual expressions (glances, smiles, movements, winks...) during concerts are testimony to how much this group absorbs the vibrations, the magic of listening and the pleasure of listening that comes from the audience. And its brilliant performances at various European festivals (partly documented on this disc) are a brilliant confirmation of this. Long live Eternal Love!
