Con tutta l’intenzione di restituire il suono così come viene emesso, senza doverlo tirare a lucido, ma anzi raccogliendo e portando con sé tutto il pulviscolo sonoro che si forma strada facendo, il nuovo progetto guidato da Piero Bittolo Bon mette in primo piano un’autenticità diretta. Big Hell On Air, il lavoro in uscita a settembre per Auand Records e coprodotto da El Gallo Rojo, lo vede in compagnia dei suoi Bread & Fox: oltre al leader impegnato al sax alto, flauto e clarinetti, la formazione schiera Filippo Vignato al trombone, Glauco Benedetti alla tuba e all’euphonium, Alfonso Santimone al pianoforte e Andrea Grillini alla batteria. Questo approccio «senza cerone né fondotinta», come lo definisce lui stesso, è frutto di una delle caratteristiche della band: «La fiducia che il gruppo si trasmette vicendevolmente – spiega Bittolo Bon – nel trattare con distacco le partiture, quasi come se fossero dei limiti. E lo sono!»

La successione delle nove tracce, tutte scritte dal compositore tranne Paper Toilet di Henry Threadgill («un brano che trovo magnifico»), scava in questa direzione sin dalla brevissima e cupa #b2de10, quasi un’anticamera al ribollente magma sonoro che inizia a espandersi a partire da Spice Girls From Arrakis, dove una linea ipnotica che intreccia fiati e ritmica si gonfia e si dilata, facendosi ora più ironica, ora più maestosa e imponente. «Continuo a perseverare nella ricerca di linee motiviche – racconta Bittolo Bon – che nonostante tutto abbiano la potenzialità di essere cantabili o quantomeno di riuscire a scavarsi una piccola tana nella corteccia cerebrale dell'ascoltatore». E questo vale non solo per i pezzi più spumeggianti, ma anche per composizioni più essenziali come Everything Works, che si sviluppa con lunghe pennellate di suono giocate su un intreccio lento e graduale dei timbri.

Al centro di tutto, un interplay viscerale e talvolta feroce, che accende i riflettori sul suono di squadra piuttosto che sul singolo improvvisatore. Per dirla con le parole di Bittolo Bon, «Musicisti splendidi, esemplari umani magnifici, orecchie come radar, sesto senso per l'esplorazione, rabdomanti della struttura, centravanti dell'improvvisazione. Con loro l'onere di essere leader è davvero relativo».

With the intention of bringing back the sound as it is, with no polish, and actually collecting and carrying the fine dust that formed on the way, Piero Bittolo Bon’s new project focuses on thorough authenticity. Big Hell On Air, his new album out in Fall 2016 under Auand Records and co-produced by El Gallo Rojo, features the Italian musician’s band Bread & Fox: besides Bittolo Bon on alto sax, flute and clarinets, the group includes Filippo Vignato on trombone, Glauco Benedetti on tuba and euphonium, Alfonso Santimone on piano and Andrea Grillini on drums. Their approach «with no foundation cream», as the leader describes it, is the result of the band’s traits, such as «the trust they instill each other – Bittolo Bon says – when dealing with the scores with detachment, as if they were limits. And they are!»

All 9 tracks are composed by him, except for Henry Threadgill’s Paper Toilet («a wonderful tune» he adds) and the tracklist follows this path from the very beginning: the dark and brief #b2de10, a sort of harbinger for the bursting lava of sounds that starts expanding in Spice Girls From Arrakis. Here, a hypnotic melody blending wind instruments and rhythm section swells and grows, becoming either ironic or grandiose and impressive. «Nevertheless, I keep searching for new lines – Bittolo Bon says – that are still catchy, or at least able to dig a small hole in the mind of the listener.» Which is true for some sparkling tunes, as well as for essential compositions, such as Everything Works, that develops through long music brush strokes in a gradual and slow bind od timbers.

At the core of all is an innate and sometimes wild interplay: the spotlight is on the team, rather than on one improviser. As Bittolo Bon puts it, they are «amazing musicians, awesome human beings, radar-like ears with a sixth sense for exploration, dowsers of structures, strikers of improvisation. With each of them, the duty of being a leader is really relative.»
