Presentazione di “To The Beat Of My Footsteps” di Milos Colovic

Sono entusiasta di unirmi alla ‘’Serbian Wave’’ su A.MA Records. Sebbene questa sia la mia prima apparizione sull’etichetta, mi sento già parte della famiglia A.MA per il fatto che ho suonato con quasi tutti i musicisti serbi che ne fanno parte. Li considero alcuni dei miei più cari colleghi e amici e la maggior parte della mia band è composta da musicisti che si sono già esibiti su album A.MA.       Questo è un disco che è stato preparato lentamente da quando ho formato il mio trio con Andreja Hristić (pianoforte) e Miloš Grbatinić (batteria) circa 9 anni fa. Dopo aver sviluppato la chimica tra noi tre, prendendo ispirazione dai grandi trii per pianoforte di Bill Evans, Cedar Walton, Horace Silver, Bobby Timmons, Sonny Clark ecc. mentre lavoravo sia sui miei originali che sugli standard per così tanto tempo, ho dovuto finalmente documentare questa band. Allo stesso tempo stavo scrivendo altri brani per una formazione con una sezione fiati ispirato principalmente dal post bop degli anni '60 (Wayne Shorter, Jackie McLean, Andrew Hill...) e dalla musica da film (Basil Poledouris, Carter Burwell...). Sono giunto all'idea di presentare anche quell'aspetto della mia musica mettendo insieme un sestetto. È stata formata una sezione fiati da sogno con Ivan Radivojević (tp), Luka Ignjatović (as) e Rastko Obradović (ts).                                                                                        Il risultato è un repertorio stilisticamente molto vario con brani per trio di pianoforte e tracce per sestetto che spaziano dal post/hard-bop e boogaloo a pezzi più contemporanei. Sebbene il sestetto sia una band piuttosto giovane, tutti noi abbiamo suonato innumerevoli volte insieme in formazioni diverse e penso che il forte legame tra tutti i ragazzi sia evidente. Il mio obiettivo è suonare il più possibile con questa band e sviluppare il nostro sound attraverso concerti e registrazioni future.                                                                                                                              Per quanto riguarda le tracce dell'album:                                                                                    Cimmeria prende il nome dalla patria di Conan il Barbaro. La musica è ispirata alla colonna sonora di Basil Poledouris per il film Conan e da Jackie McLean. Il mio obiettivo era quello di portare la musica da film e temi fantasy epici in un'ambientazione post-bop.                                                Losing Count è il suggerimento più ovvio del mio apprezzamento per Bill Evans Trio. Un valzer oscuro e fluttuante con il trio.                                                                                                      Monsieur De Bordeaux è un po' un boogaloo "grungy". Le parti A sono adattate da una canzone che ho scritto per la mia rock band, Bordeaux con Jasmin Rastić dei Gazorpazorp. Il titolo è pensato per essere letto come se fosse scritto in serbo anziché in francese. È dedicato a tutti i miei amici di Belgrado, in particolare quelli del quartiere.                                                             

Shapeshifter è il brano più vecchio dell'album; negli ultimi 10 anni è stato uno dei brani più rappresentativi del mio trio.                                                                                                                       In Solitude faccio del mio meglio per rendere omaggio ad alcuni dei miei tanti eroi del basso. In particolare, il modo in cui Oscar Pettiford suonava le ballate mi ha lasciato un segno enorme.        The Dreadful Moths è una vecchia melodia originariamente chiamata D&D. Il nuovo titolo è la traduzione di un gioco di parole che può essere interpretato come "Bad MFs". È un brano up-tempo con alcune curve e svolte e presenta tutti e 6 i Dreadful Moths presenti. Si è rivelato il preferito del pubblico.                                                                                                                           To The Beat Of My Footsteps è composta da due parti. La prima è ispirata alla musica di Paul Motian, mentre la seconda, anche se non è così ovvio, trae ispirazione dai Queens Of The Stone Age. La canzone inizia in modo piuttosto malinconico, ma si sviluppa in un intenso e trionfante vamp con tutti i fiati che suonano da solisti contemporaneamente. Ha l'atmosfera di un tema dei titoli di coda.

The Serbian Wave continues with the release of Milos Colovic's new album, To The Beat of My Footsteps. The Belgrade based bassman is debuting on A.MA Records but is no stranger to the Serbian Wave canon due to his playing alongside and sitting in with previously released A.MA artists including Max Kochetov's live presentation of his album in Bari in 2022.                                                                                                                       This time, it's Milos presenting his undoubted talents as musician, band leader, composer and arranger with his first A.MA release To The Beat of My Footsteps. Part of the New Bop sound, The Beat of My Fooststeps proudly displays its influences on its sleeve with big nods to Horace Silver, Bobby Timmons and Sonny Clark alongside the horn sections of Wayne Shorter and Jackie McLean as well as film soundtracks from Basil Poledouris and Carter Burwell.                                                                                                                           However, the sound created by Milos and the trio and sextet on To The Beat of My Footsteps also takes influences in its individual tracks from the Rock and Grunge genres, not least in the two  tracks Monsieur de Bordeaux and the title track itself.
As Milos explains, ' Monsieur De Bordeaux is a bit of a “grungy” boogaloo. The A parts are adapted from a song I wrote for my rock band - Bordeaux with Jasmin Rastić of Gazorpazorp' and 'To The Beat Of My Footsteps consists of two parts. The first part is inspired by Paul Motian’s music while the second, although it’s not so obvious, actually draws inspiration from Queens Of The Stone Age. The song starts pretty melancholic but develops into an intense and triumphant vamp with all the horns soloing at the same time. It has the vibe of an end credits theme.'                                                                            

Milos has put together a formidable line-up of musicians on this album to create both a sextet and a trio that includes fellow A.MA released artist Ivan Radiojevic alongside a cream of Belgrade based Serbian Wave jazz genius Andreja Hristic, Milos Grbatinic, Luka Ignjatovic, and Rastko Obradovic. To The Beat of My Footsteps an album of new bop Jazz to be enjoyed and savoured.
