La voce è la prima cosa a colpirmi quando sento Marit cantare. Non è così strano, forse, quando si ascolta una cantante, ma Marit ha molto di più di una voce tecnicamente eccellente. E’ così dalla prima volta che l’ho sentita all’inizio degli anni ottanta; più che una voce che canta, ha una voce che racconta.
Che stia cantando o comunicando in altro modo, la si ascolta sempre da vicino, poiché ha un messaggio da dare. Secondo me, la creazione della musica è tutta qui. Prendete, ad esempio, l’incantevole melodia di “Be My Song”, composta da Jorn Oien, a cui Marit ha messo le parole. Lo ha registrato la prima volta nel 1995 (“Song, Fall Soft” TRCD 834). In questa prima registrazione si sente una voce con tanto da dire e allo stesso tempo intrigante e profonda. E’ interessante, quindi, mettere a confronto l’ultima versione con la sua prima registrazione. Io trovo Marit ancora altrettanto pungente, solo, voce e stile narrativo hanno acquisito maggiore autorità e sfumatura.

Quando ho invitato Marit e il chitarrista Oystein Norvoll a Spoleto, nell’estate 2014 a collaborare ad un progetto con musicisti italiani, Maurizio Picchiò è stato la scelta più naturale per la batteria. Il suo approccio garbato al nostro repertorio ha dato terra fertile all’idea di un progetto con la musica di Marit. Grazie alla sua ampia rete di conoscenze e grande capacità organizzativa, “Travel” ha potuto essere realizzato pochi mesi dopo.
Come musicista Maurizio Picchiò ha un curriculum ricchissimo: già da adolescente ha suonato ad Umbria Jazz con Ramberto Ciammarughi, uno dei pianisti italiani più interessanti, contemporaneamente studiano la batteria con Jimmy Cobb e Jack De Johnette, fra gli altri. Al volgere degli anni ottanta è stato in tour in Italia, Svizzera e Germania col suo quartetto, attività culminata nella successiva registrazione dell’album “Biri San” per la Splas(h). Nel corso di un’intensa carriera da musicista freelance, si è esibito nella maggior parte dei festival jazz in Europa come turnista di musicisti come Scott Henderson, Roy Hargrove, Kenny Kirkaland e Maurizio Giammarco. Chi sono, quindi, i musicisti invitati da Marit e Maurizio a questo progetto? Per Marit è stato semplice scegliere il pianista Eivind Valnes. I due hanno collaborato per molti anni, anche per “Even Then (Mother Song)” TRCD 843, il suo secondo CD. Valnes ha lavorato con la maggior parte dei musicisti di spicco norvegesi in gruppi come la Henning Gravrok Band e il Glenes/Ytreberg Quartet. Inoltre, insegna musica all’Università di Tromso.
In quanto a Maurizio Picchiò, è stato naturale scegliere un buon amico, Maurizio Giammarco. Quest’ultimo è stato una figura chiave nella scena jazz italiana dall’inizio degli anni settanta. Oltre a quelli con Kenny Wheeler, Mike Stern e Dee Dee Bridgewater, ha preso parte anche a progetti con Chet Baker, Dave Liebman, Billy Cobham, Phil Woods e molti altri.
Già a partire dall’anno successivo a quello in cui Raffaello Pareti e il suo quartetto hanno registrato “Il Ciro” (Egea 2003), l’album si è classificato fra i dieci migliori CD dell’anno secondo la rivista jazz Down Beat. Dalla metà degli anni ottanta Pareti è stato fra le figure centrali della scena jazz italiana. Fra i suoi partner musicali: Enrico Rava, Paolo Fresu, Gabriele Mirabassi, Chet Baker, Toots Thielemans, Lee Konitz ed altri.
Fabrizio Bosso è attualmente uno dei più prestigiosi trombettisti solisti del jazz e della scena italiana ed europea. All’inizio degli anni duemila, importante p stata la collaborazione col cantautore Sergio Cammariere. Nel 2004 ha pubblicato l’album “Handful of Soul” con il gruppo High Five Quintet, in tour in Giappone nel 2008. Bosso è apparso da solista con molti gruppi italiani ed europei e nel 2012 a Umbria Jazz con la Eastman Jazz Orchestra nel ruolo di Miles Davis in “Miles Ahead” e “Quiet Nights” di Gil Evans.

In questo già articolato CD, la musica è poi stata arricchita con due arrangiamenti per quartetto d’archi. Il direttore d’orchestra e compositore Luciano di Giandomenico ne è l’autore, completando così un paesaggio già molto vario.

Un’ultima cosa, ed è: godetevi il viaggio!

Another of Marit's traits is her ability to become a natural part of an arrangement in an ensemble. ”Going Back, Going Forth”, ”While Resting My Hands”, and not least ”Måtte Bare” are all excellent examples of this. Naturally enough, this requires a different control and technique than singing a solo in a freer manner. Maybe it is the result of her steadily growing interest in composing and arranging? In contrast to the above-mentioned ”Song, Fall Soft”, most of the music on "Travel" was composed by Marit herself, not to mention all the lyrics, too, which quite naturally make her voice all the more distinct. When I invited Marit and guitarist Øystein Norvoll to Spoleto, Italy, during the summer of 2014 to collaborate on a project with Italian musicians, Maurizio Picchiò was the natural choice to play drums. His supple approach to our repertoire provided fertile ground to the idea of a recording project featuring Marit´s music. With the help of Maurizio´s large network and energetic organizational ability, "Travel" was realized only a few short months later. As a musician Maurizio Picchiò has an abundant list credits on his CV: Already as a teenager, he played the Umbria Jazz Festival with Ramberto Giammarughi, one of Italy's most interesting pianists, while at the same time studying drums with Jimmy Cobb and Jack De Johnette, among others. At the close of the 1980s, he toured in Italia, Switzerland and Germany with his own quartet, culminating in the subsequent recording of the album "Biri San" on the Splas(h) label. In the course of an intensely active career as a freelance musician, he has played most of the major jazz festivals in Europe as a sideman for musicians such as Scott Henderson, Roy Hargrove, Kenny Kirkland and, not least, Maurizio Giammarco. So who are the musicians that Marit and Maurizio have invited to participate in this project? For Marit, it was a simple choice to invite pianist Eivind Valnes. The two have collaborated for a number of years, including on Marit's second CD ”Even Then (Mother Song)” TRCD 843). Valnes has worked with the majority of Northern Norway's most prominent musicians in groups such as the Henning Gravrok Band and Glesnes/Ytreberg Quartet. Moreover, he teaches music at the University of Tromsø. As far as Maurizio Picchiò is concerned, it was just as natural for him to choose his good friend, Maurizio Giammarco. The latter has been a key figure on the Italian jazz scene since the beginning of the 1970s. In addition to his own projects including the likes of Kenny Wheeler, Mike Stern and Dee Dee Bridgewater, he has participated in projects with Chet Baker, Dave Liebman, Billy Cobham, Phil Woods and many others. Already the year after Raffaello Pareti and his quartet recorded ”Il Ciro” (Egea 2003), the album was ranked among the ten best CDs of the year by the jazz magazine Down Beat. Since the mid 1980s Pareti has been among the most important figures on the Italian jazz scene. Some of his musical partners include Enrico Rava, Paolo Fresu, Gabriele Mirabassi, Chet Baker, Toots Thielemans, Lee Konitz and others. Fabrizio Bosso is currently one of the most renowned trumpet soloists in the fields of jazz and entertainment music in Italy and Europe. At the beginning of the 2000s, an important source of collaboration for Bosso was singer/songwriter Sergio Cammariere. In 2004, he played with Charlie Haden and Carla Bley in their Liberation Orchestra. In 2006, he released the album ”Handful of Soul” with the band High Five Quintet, which toured Japan in 2008. Bosso has been a featured soloist with a multitude of Italian and European bands, and in 2012 he was a soloist during the Umbria Jazz Festival with Eastman Jazz Orchestra in the role of Miles Davis in Gil Evans' ”Miles Ahead” and ”Quiet Nights”. In this veritable horn of plenty of a CD, they have also spiced the music with two arrangements for string quartet. The Italian conductor and music arranger Luciano Di Giandomenico has written these arrangements, which help to enrich an already well-varied soundscape. There is but one thing left for me to say, namely: Enjoy the travel!

Voglio ringraziare i musicisti; Raffaello, Maurizio, Fabrizio, Eivind e Maurizio per essersi immersi nella musica e per averla suonata con tanto cuore e ardore. Quello che mi ha sempre affascinato della musica, in particolare del linguaggio jazz è che può offrirci la possibilità di entrare in relazione con l’altro senza finzioni, con coraggio, sincerità e onestà, alla ricerca della bellezza di cui ognuno di noi ha bisogno per vivere. Il titolo che abbiamo scelto per questo progetto mi sembra veramente centrato. In questo viaggio ognuno di noi ha voluto e ha potuto dare il meglio di sè anche grazie alle bellissime composizioni di Marit. Un grande ringraziamento va a: Fabrizio Bosso, Raffaello Pareti, Eivind Valnes; Maurizio Giammarco per il suo contributo nella scrittura degli arrangiamenti e la sua disponibilità; Luciano Di Giandomenico per la sua amicizia e la sua competenza; Giuseppe Tortora, Marcello Sirignano e & B.i.m.Orchestra Ancora grazie a Marit per la sua squisita sensibilità e per aver accettato con coraggio e generosità di mettersi in gioco.

One thing about music - especially jazz - I have always been attracted to is the chance to get in touch with other people as we really are, courageously and honestly - searching for the beauty we all need to live. Therefore, when Marit let me listen to one of her CDs recorded in Norway, it came out quite naturally to ask her to create a project together. The title of this work of ours sounds really appropriate to me, a journey where each one of us has been given the opportunity to do one's best thanks to Marit's marvellous musical atmosphere. A heartfelt thank-you to Fabrizio Bosso, Raffaello Pareti, Eivind Valnes, Maurizio Gianmarco for his contribution to arrangement writing, Luciano Di Giandomenico for his friendship and knowledge, Giuseppe Tortora, Marcello Sirignano e & B. i. m. Orchestra. Once again, thanks to Marit for her extraordinary sensitivity and her courage in taking up such beautiful challenge.
