Il jazz, trovatosi spesso nella sua storia con le spalle al muro, ha imparato a cogliere il più possibile dalle altre musiche. Proprio per questo il soul gli è stato utile, sorgendo spontaneo dalle propaggini dell’hard bop e venendo reso popolare dai grandi solisti di quello stile. Utilizzando accordi derivati dal gospel ed arrangiamenti basati sulla formula del call and response il soul jazz – di questo stiamo parlando – ha cercato un ritorno alle origini, richiamandosi alle sonorità religiose della Chiesa afroamericana ed alla tradizione laica del blues. Tutto questo, negli anni sessanta del secolo scorso, gli consentì di assumere presso il pubblico di quel periodo la dimensione di uno stato di grazia che recava molti dei valori dell’R&B. E che tutto questo, venga oggi assunto da alcuni artisti serbi, come una cifra stilistica per dare alle stampe uno dei dischi più gradevoli dell’ultimo periodo è la testimonianza del potere di penetrazione che ancora questa musica ha presso le nuove generazioni. “The Soulful Of Heritage”, titolo esplicativo per qualcosa che pesca a piene mani in quell’humus, però con un pizzico di modernità di cui la pianista Irina Pavlovic ha fatto tesoro forte di un solido curriculum che le ha consentito di organizzare un sestetto che ha assimilato alla perfezione gli stilemi di quel linguaggio. Non pensiate di trovarvi di fronte ad una operazione calligrafica: i signori che suonano in questo disco hanno studiato ben altro ma come ha detto qualcuno “il vecchio spiritual, i suoi accordi erano così facili, e, allo stesso tempo, così invitanti che alla lunga ci appiccicai una nuova melodia”. Quel qualcuno si chiamava Horace Silver e i musicisti serbi di “The Soulful Of Heritage” lo hanno preso alla lettera. A.MA Records' exploration of the Serbian Wave of contemporary jazz continues with The Soulful Heritage; the debut album for the label from pianist and composer Irina Pavlovic.

Calling on a stellar line-up of musicians, including A.MA label mate Ivan Radivojevic and US vocalist Dean Bowman, Irina has created an album which pays homage to the soul jazz sound of the 1960's allied with a cinema soundtrack feel that is redolent of the jazz that augmented the films of the  French New Wave.

Irina Pavlovic is a pianist and flautist who has developed a distinct style influenced and inspired by  Swing, Be-Bop, Hard Bop which she blends with her love of the Blues, Gospel and Afro-Cuban rhythms.  A regular performer at Jazz festivals across Central Europe and the Balkans, Irina is an arranger who brings all her musicianship, performance experiences and influences together across the ten tracks of The Soulful Heritage, not least in the lead track Arriba, Arriba, a six minute slab of percussive Be-Bop, and the title track, a beautifully soul fuelled composition featuring the vocals of Dean Bowman.
